Matilda looked up from the flowerbed she was weeding.
Oh, no! Where had Melissa found the dandelion clock?
She essayed to study the watch-face on her bare arm.
Why on earth had she taught the little girl to play this silly game?
“It’s three o’clock, Lissa love,” she answered, watching the intake of breath, the rosy lips pursed, the extended little-girl blow. ‘Flower fairies’ scattered across the lawn. “One!”
(Surely Jesus wasn’t talking about dandelion seeds when He told the parable of the Sower?)
Another breath, another blow – shorter this time. “Two!” Another scatter, some fell on the path.
Do birds eat dandelion seeds?
Melissa twirled the seed-head, considering the remainder of the winged seeds still attached.
“Three!” She blew hard. A ‘flower fairy’ detached itself and floated to the path.
“You were wrong, Granny!”
The little girl dissolved into laughter. She huffed and puffed between counts: “Four – five – six – seven!” shaking the seed-head vigorously as she capered across the lawn to offer the now bare dandelion clock to her grandmother.
Matilda curtseyed, smiling as she accepted the proffered gift.
Oh, Lissa, Lissa-love, every one of those seeds will grow. What did Jesus say about the farmer’s seeds? Some an hundred-fold?
She gathered the little girl to herself in a tight hug. “Come, darling. Just time to have a cool drink before we visit Mummy. Perhaps today you will be able to hold Baby Joel.”
And I will NEVER teach Baby Joel the dandelion clock game! But, she laughed at herself, I probably will – and if I don’t Melissa will. After all, apart from my knees when it is time to dig the dandelions out of the lawn, it really hurts no one, and it is such fun for the little ones.
