And…
In the beginning of his last week on earth, Jesus made a triumphal entry into Jerusalem, on the back of a donkey. People cheered as he passed and laid their cloaks, and branches they cut from trees, at his feet. They cheered and shouted “Hosanna” as he passed. Did they fully understand what was truly beginning?
On the second day, God separated the water below from the water above by creating an expanse and placing it between them. God called the expanse “sky”
And…
On the second day of Jesus’ last week, he separated the thieves who were occupying the temple from their money. He overturned the tables belonging to the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. People who were using the house of the Lord to conduct profitable business transactions were unceremoniously driven out. For a time, some space was created for the temple to be the house of prayer it was meant to be.
On the third day, God created land. On this land he created vegetation and seed bearing plants and trees of all kinds. All over the land, living things took root and began to grow.
And…
On the third day of his final week in human form, Jesus began to teach for the last time in the temple he had cleared of greedy merchants the previous day. He taught about belief and faith. He taught about obedience. He spoke to them in parables about the tenants who killed the son of their landowner to steal his inheritance, and what their reward was to be, and he told them about the wedding banquet where strangers were allowed to feast because those originally invited refused to come. He planted many seeds this day, and some of them fell on fertile ground, took root and began to grow.
On the fourth day, God set the stars in the heavens and made the sun and the moon to govern the day and the night. He set them in the expanse of the sky to give light to the earth and to separate light from darkness.
And…
On his fourth day of his last week, we know almost nothing of what Jesus did. Was he off in prayer in Gethsemane? Was he in meditation somewhere alone? We do not know where the “light of the world” was on this day, but we do know where his enemies were - plotting to kill the Lord. Judas met with the chief priests, secured his price and began to watch for an opportunity to hand over his master. A little darkness had set itself against the great light.
On the fifth day, God created every living thing that fills both the water and the air. Those two things that are so vital for our everyday sustenance were literally teeming with life suddenly. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply”.
And…
On the fifth day of Jesus’ last week in the flesh, he met with his disciples for one last meal. Before it began, though, he filled a bowl with water and, with a towel around his waist, he taught them what it really means to follow him. He washed their feet. Afterwards Jesus spoke to them of how he wanted to them to do for the rest of the world as he had done for them. He prayed for them and commanded them to love one another as he loved them. It was almost time for them to become the “fishers of men” he had promised them they would be so long ago.
On the sixth day God created all the creatures of the earth, and man in his own image. With his own hands he formed man, and with his own breath he breathed the breath of life into man, so that man might live.
And…
On the sixth day of Jesus’ last week, he spent his last breath, after being nailed to a cross, so that man might once again have life.
On the seventh day God rested.
And…
On the seventh day of Jesus’ last week, he lay resting in a tomb.
God said all that he had made was very good. I say it was outstanding.
