Topic: Hear (07/08/10)
When my nephew was born profoundly deaf the family began learning sign language. Although my sister became quite fluent in the visual language because of her son, the rest of us muddled through with our choppy efforts. We were more like the Pilgrims trying to communicate with the Indians: “Me love em you.” All in all, we tried our best yet gave more hugs and smiles than anything.

My sister, Gina, became so sign savvy that she was asked to sign for the deaf at the local community church services. I found myself getting more out of the message listening to the pastor and watching his words unfold in pictures from her fingers. It was quite beautiful to see especially the hymns of praise. It was as if seeing a graceful ballet in her hands as they formed visual praises in the air.

I had not realized just how many deaf lived around our area, but we had rather a few pews filling up with those coming to see what they could not hear. It was an amazing door that opened up from what started out so tragic for our family.

Then one Sunday one of the ladies signed that the greatest regret she had in being deaf was not having the ability to hear God like a hearing person. When this was related back to me I was astonished. Who would have every thought such a thing? Of course, how would this woman have ever known that the voice of God was heard the same by all of His children. Then I began to ponder about the thought of how many hearing people turn a deaf ear to God.

Deafness can be found in the hearing as well as the impaired. We all have to learn to read the signs by feeling after God as the Scripture says in Acts 17:27 “That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us.” We see and hear God, as the blind must feel to see and the deaf to hear within themselves.

Who would have ever guessed that it would be a deaf lady to teach me how to hear?

Good devotional thoughts that lead to a powerful truth. I love to watch folks sign worship songs...it's awe inspiring, especially when they put their heart into it.

This was a very touching read. It is amazing what we can learn from those who are impaired. I just wanted to let you know I caught a grammatical error here. (Who would have every ) Also, the website says when you quote scripture to include the version you are using, just so you know for future writings. I enjoyed this very much though and more churches need to take into consideration those who are unable to hear.

This is a profound message. I remember seeing a familiar hymn being signed once and it gave me chills. This is a great devotion and a message so many need to hear.

Thanks for sharing a great life lesson. If you were to write deaf, instead of profoundly deaf and beautiful, instead of quite beautiful, for example, the same message is conveyed with more impact. Try reading it that way and see what you think. Tighter writing will make your good story even better.
