Ladies, Gentlemen, boys and girls: Have you ever thought about that great day when the church was born on that Day of Pentecost? Here’s something to ponder. What would it be like to be in the Angelic Dispatching Command Center? Let’s see how busy the angels are now while Peter is in the middle of his sermon in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2, as we call it today.
(Sound effect: Telephone ringing sound.)
MICHAEL
(picks up a phone located on a table mid-stage) Herald the Son Times, Editor-in-Chief Michael speaking. (pauses) okay, okay…got it. I know Peter is in the middle of the most important sermon of his life and… (picks up some paper from the table) it looks like he should be speaking about the young men seeing visions and the old men having dreams. (pauses) What?
SETH
Excuse me—
MICHAEL
There’s a problem coming?
SETH
Sir?
MICHAEL
Right behind me? (spins around) Oh, I see him now. Thank You, Father.
SETH
Excuse me, sir. There seems to be a problem with Peter. His thoughts are beginning to wander. Here’s the latest report from the field (hands Michael a piece of paper)
MICHAEL
(pauses, reads the paper for a few seconds) Oh…this is NOT good. NOT good at all. It says here Peter should soon be preaching, This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.
SETH
Look at the words written all in capitalized letters.
MICHAEL
I see it: “I WANT TO GO FISHING”. Let me take care of this now. (picks up a red pen and crosses out the wandering thought, then hands the paper back to Seth) Here Seth, take this immediately back to the field. Have Nathaniel’s unit do battle with the Opposing Thought Forces. Hurry!
SETH
Yes sir! Consider it done. (exits, stage left)
MICHAEL
(looks up) We’ve been preparing for this day for four thousand earth years. Lucifer and his minions are no match for the Lord’s mighty host! (phone ringing sound) Father? (pauses) Another attack?
SETH
(returns, a little out of breath) Sir, I returned as quickly as I could. The Opposition Thought Forces were defeated. But, apparently they were just the first wave. Here’s the latest report. (hands Michael another piece of paper)
MICHAEL
(takes the paper and reads it for a few seconds) Okay, the next part of the sermon should be, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Then their reaction will be: Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
SETH
Look at the capitalized letters.
MICHAEL
I see. It reads, “I FEEL GUILTY ABOUT DENYING JESUS. I HELPED HIM DIE.” It won’t work, Lucifer! (picks up the red pen and crosses out the capitalized letters and hands the paper back to Seth) Take this immediately back to the field.
SETH
Yes sir! (exits, stage left)
MICHAEL
So, what other sneaky plans does Lucifer have cooked up on this special day? (phone rings) Father? (pauses) I see. Okay, I will tell Seth, and thank You sir. (pauses) Seth?
SETH
(returns, very much out of breath) Yes sir, I return with an updated report from the field (tries to hand the paper to Michael).
MICHAEL
(holds up his right hand to stop Seth) Stop. I have a message for you, Seth, from The Father.
SETH
Oh?
MICHAEL
(reaches over to the table and hands him the red pen) You are now promoted to Editor-In-Chief.
SETH
(takes the pen) Thank you sir, and thank You, Father. (looks at the paper) The heart of the sermon should be, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” But the capitalized letters are screaming, “I WANT TO QUIT.”
MICHAEL
Cross them out!
SETH
Done.
MICHAEL
Go and do battle: you now have the authority of our Father.
