They were all sprawled out on the living room floor of her apartment, when Allison started up with another one of her silly questions. “Okay, okay…let’s skip that-” She spoke around a mouthful of popcorn, still stuffing kernels in her face. “What about superpowers? What’s your superpower?”
“Language of the burp.” Jackson snorted, thumping the ground with his fist while Brad slapped his shoulder.
At this point in the morning, very little made sense to their frazzled, college-student brians, so instead of heading to bed, they ranted and raved about life, in between Allison’s philosophical questions. They all laughed with Jackson as if they agreed and waited for the next earth-shattering revelation.
“Mine’s poetry!” Lissa said, importantly. Her pinched nose tipped up in the air and she borrowed Jackson’s awful imitation of a British accent, beginning to recite lines on the spot.
“Poetry’s not a superpower.” Jayme interrupted. “I can fix any cellphone…that’s a superpower.”
“Poetry could work…sort of.” Ulani shrugged. “It’s a writing thing…and it’s art and art is a superpower.”
“Uh-huh?” Brad rolled over, propping himself upon his elbows to study his girlfriend. “If that’s the case, then what’s mine and what’s yours?”
Ulani grinned. “Writing! Sheer volume of writing! You can write more than anyone I know.”
Another loud cheer went up and Brad blushed a faint touch of pink. He shared a smile with her for a moment, before the romantic moment exploded with the fog and he quickly returned the question. “That’s great, but what about you? What’s yours, babe?”
The islander girl though it over for a moment. “Eek.” She said, finally. “I can scare anyone…that’s close enough to a superpower, isn’t it?”
“What?” Jayme’s curly head popped up over the edge of the sofa. “No way, girl…you’re too…nice.”
“Too nice?” Brad snorted. “You obviously haven’t met her temper.”
Ulani whacked him with the nearest throw pillow, but offered no defense.
“I’m with Jayme on that one.” Allison yawned. “Girl, you are so sweet sometimes—you give me toothaches.”
“Eek is creepy.” Ulani reminded them. “I can do creepy really good.”
“Gimme a sample then…” Brad tweaked her toe. “Something that won’t completely send me over the edge of sanity.”
“You fell off that edge years ago!” She poked his shoulder with her foot. “I’m serious, for instance…pretend you’re sleeping…and you hear a POW! And then all of a sudden you’re covered in something cold and slimy and-”
“and gross. I’m copping out. G’night girl.” Jayme rolled her eyes, flopping onto the sofa. “I say we all camp out here tonight…all in favor, say aye!”
A few aye’s came around the group followed by snoring came from Jackson’s corner. After a few more jokes, the group went from silent to asleep.
Lissa was the first one to wake at the sound of the pop. It was loud and unusual in a way that jolted her straight out of dreamland.
She leapt from the sofa, clutching her chest and shrieking while fumbling for the lamp on the end table. Her cries immediately woke the men’s department, prompting some rather interesting exclamations from the two boys before someone turned a light on.
“Eek!” Jayme’s scream was last, delivered precisely as the light came on. For a moment, they all stared at each other and then collectively turned towards the sofa Ulani had formerly occupied.
“What is it?” Allison picked at a jelly glob smothered on her chest, wrinkling her nose in disgust. “Oh ew!”
“Ick.” Jayme frowned. “Wait a minute…this is jelly.”
“Jell-O.” Brad corrected. “I think I’m lemon and you must be cherry.”
“Water balloons?” Jackson held up a scrap of colorful rubber. “It’s a jelly bomb.”
“Jello-O.” Brad repeated.
The group exchanged a look. “Ulani!”
“Catch.” Ulani’s voice came from the kitchen, the colorful item sailing through the air moments later.
“Eek!” Jayme squealed as the Jell-O filled balloon exploded in her hands. “Oh ew…it’s sticky…all right, I take it back. Your superpower is resident scarecrow. You’d better help clean this up!”
“Naturally. It’s my mess.” Ulani grinned. “Couldn’t resist though.”
“Resist?”
“I bought the Jell-O last week.”
