On weekends when I’d nothin’ to do,
I’d hang around with other coffee-shoppers
At Sunrise Café, swapping lots o’ whoppers—
We laughed a bunch at jokes and stories said,
But one old fellow made me scratch my head,
He loved one-upping, and boy could he go!—
We called him “Old Joe”, and he was rather slow—
When I would talk about our eagles,
He’d laugh, and say, “Boy, you have seagulls?”
He’d blabber on about the vast amount
Of laughing gulls, beyond what he could count…
I’d spread my arms when talking ‘bout our condor
He’d mount a chair and boast about his condos—
He’d laugh about how much he paid for each,
And brag about how near they are to the beach…
When I explained the size of all our deer,
He said that his “Old Dear” was one to fear,
And all the bruises she had given him
When she had brandished a giant rolling pin…
And when I said a word about our moose,
He talked about the size of his caboose—
And it turned out the man was an engineer
Who worked a train so long he had no peer…
The old man one-upped all that I could say,
From birds to snakes, he always had his way;
When I just mentioned “hippopotamus”
He said, “Just who is flippin’ out too much?”
But then, one day, I found Old Joe was gone.
And I admit that I soon missed the clown—
Without his humor there was no circus,
And I had yet to brag ’bout our rhinoceros!
