I never quite understood why she answered that way back then, although I thought it was quite clever and cute. But in thinking about the way she would answer such questions, I think I understand now, she was thinking of orange as a manifestation of God’s outlook on the world and humanity. She used to baby sit my children on various occasions and I recall she would always remark on beautiful sunsets at certain times when we were all together. She took note, no doubt, at God’s preference for orange when He painted His messages to mankind at the beginning and ending of each day.
I’ve seen many a sunrise and sunset in the intervening years, but none more exhilarating than I enjoy now, in the country side outside a small town in central Florida.where the sun comes up bright and beautiful, most days of the year. Of course, sometimes the sky is hazy or cloudy, but mostly it begins with a beautiful sunrise and closes with a spectacular sunset, some of the most lovely I have ever seen. A heavenly splash of brilliant colors, not only orange, but pink, purple and lavender, with shades of gray, almost too glorious for a man-made camera to capture.
Yes, the most prominent color of sunrises and sunsets in our part of the world is orange – bright, resplendent, flaming orange, spread all along the horizon at daybreak and at dusk. Out here in the country the sky is as clear as one could imagine, and it becomes, at the beginning of most days and at their conclusion, like a great celestial screen on which can be displayed the glory of God’s incomparable handiwork. God never makes any mistakes. His works are perfect. That stunningly beautiful divine artistry that begins and ends each of our days, is not not the result of accidental natural causes !
Thinking about that teenager and her reply to a simple query, I got to pondering the beauty of all that is related to the sun in our world. I happen to believe these magnificent and glorious sky-paintings, by the hand of God, at the start and the finish of every day, remind of us of God’s good wishes for all His creation. Is this not His way of saying to all His on-looking earth-family “Have a wonderful and delightful day!”
Personally, I believe there is nothing we can view from earth’s vantage point, more soul-touching in a visual way than those morning and evening eruptions of color and light along the perimeters of our visual landscape Rainbows too, strike me in a similar way. Even the most gifted and famed artists and artisans who orchestrate the colors and contrasts of brilliant tones and shades with brush and paint on canvas, can ever approach, let alone compare, their works to the Masterpainter of the Universe. And obviously, He loves the color orange!
My hope and prayer is that, everyone who reads these words is feeling “very orange” today! There’s nothing dull or dark about God’s hopes and expectations for His most beloved creation, the human race. The red blood that was shed on the Cross by God’s Only Begotten Son in behalf of redeemed sinners, can alone make for “very orange days” for all the days of our lives. So let the Sun and the Son shine in!
