The crowd that had gathered around Big Blue, the 15 foot commemorative statue, slowly quieted. All eyes turned toward the stage.
He continued. “We are so glad you all could join us for the celebration of our first 100 years!” The audience clapped. “I hope you have all had a chance to get a good look at Big Blue. As you know, Big Blue was made from the wax donations sent in by you, our loyal customers. We are so appreciative to you for helping us to achieve our goal.”
“At this time, we would like to take a few moments to recognize and honor several retirees. Their dedication and commitment to this company should be commended. Year after year, each brought a unique quality to the drawing board, their creativity and their true colors always apparent. The crowd in the hall clapped and smiled in agreement.
Blizzard Blue along with the three others honorees rested motionless on the table next to the podium. Blizzard Blue had been with the company for over 30 years. Of all her factory peers, she had always been considered one of the brightest. What an amazing journey it had been, a kaleidoscope of memories. Sure there had been a few dull moments and she could even recall a few meltdowns. Back in 1990, a name change became necessary in order to assure her future with the company. Apparently, her previous name, Ultra Blue was no longer exciting enough. So, Blizzard Blue it became. It took awhile for Blizzard Blue to feel at home with her new name, but the new jacket wrapped around her with the new nametag helped her adjust relatively quickly to the new identity. Thankfully, she hadn’t been “let go” that same year like Green Blue, and Violet Blue. Rumor has it they both had a difficult time thinking outside the box.
As things turned out, boys and girls fell in love with the fluorescent shade and its new, improved name. Blizzard Blue inspired generations of kids to create one picture after another. Whether they were trying to capture the hue of brilliantly vivid skies, strikingly blue seas, or massive blue whales, the possibilities seemed endless to the young hands that clutched the pencil shaped piece of blue wax between their fingers.
“Now,” said the President, “without further delay, we would like to recognize four shades that have helped to make us into the company we are today… Mulberry, Blizzard Blue, Magic Mint and Teal Blue!” More cheers came from the crowd as the president pointed to the display table. “As with all our retired colors, these four shades will now join the nine other retired shades sitting on display on our Wall of Fame. Please take some time to visit the exhibit after the ceremony.”
“And now,” the President went on, “The moment you have all been waiting for…our brand new shades. As the President read each new addition, the color was brightly projected on the wall behind the podium… “Inch Worm, Jazzberry Jam, Mango Tango and Wild Blue Yonder!”
Blizzard Blue was speechless…The Wall of Fame? She had no idea! She was elated. Suddenly, she felt herself being lifted swiftly off the display table. A hand clutched her tightly and moved her quickly down the hall. Take it easy buddy, careful not to wrinkle the jacket! Finally, the hand loosened its grip, set her down, and gently rolled her forward so that the words Blizzard Blue were clearly visible through the glass display cabinet.
Wow… The Wall of Fame! She was still in a state of disbelief. If only her friend Shocking Pink could see her now. She was quite certain this news would most definitely surprise her. From her vantage point, Blizzard Blue had a clear view of the twelve other colors that had also achieved such a high status over the past century. Wait? Could it be? Yes! Green Blue and Violet Blue…her old friends! What a picturesque journey it been for Blizzard Blue, an adventure which was from over. From now on, she would be representing the company for many years to come. She had made her mark in history. A colorful mark!
