“Yes, my dear.”
“What do you think it’s like to die?”
I thought she perceived it too; she’s been so quiet, pensive of late. How do I answer her? I love her so.
Forcing a smile, “What do you mean?”
“Adam, you’ve noticed it. I’ve seen it in your eyes. The signs are everywhere.”
She might be asking only to see what I think about them; act dumb, “Signs?”
“Adam! You know what signs I’m talking about; for one, it’s getting colder at night?”
Seizing an opening to lighten the conversation, with a gleam in his eyes; “You have been snuggling closer lately,” adding a wink.
“Adam, you know what I mean.”
This isn’t going to work. “Yes, I’ve noticed, a little…maybe,” his voice nearly cracking.
“Do you belief it’s starting to happen? Be truthful with me,” looking at his face for the answer she knows isn’t there.
“These changes might not be anything to be concerned about…”
That’s it! “Adam, look around you!” Waving her arms, “Nothing like this has ever happened before. Everything’s dying. We’re dying!”
It’s no use. Taking her in his arms, “He said it would happen. I’m so, so sorry. Eve, you’ve been a wonderful partner and I’ve enjoyed the life we’ve made for each other after leaving the garden.” Tears slowly spill on to each other’s shoulders.
Reflecting on Eden turns tears to sobs.
The warmth of their bodies reminds them of the chill in the air.
“Eve, I have been considering the changes for some time. It’s slowly getting worse. I was hoping it would reverse but...”
“Adam, I don’t want to die. What’s it going to be like?”
He gives her another hug then gently pulls away, looking deep into the eyes he’s always loved, “I guess we can take clues from what’s happening around us.”
“The days are getting shorter, less light each day? Will we slowly go blind?”
“Perhaps, I don’t know. The sun could be getting weaker; it’s not staying up very long or as high in the sky. We may merely get weaker.”
“The leaves on the trees and plants are turning colors and falling off, they’re dying. Do you think we’ll be turning colors and falling apart too?”
Adam gasp, he had noticed Eve was getting paler as the days got shorter. Eve looks away, “Oh Adam, I knew you noticed!”
He remembers his enlarging stomach; will my chest be the first to fall?
Vivid images blaze across their minds, thoughts of ears and fingers falling off as they slowly die causes Eve to softly mention, voice quivering, “Have you noticed the deer and elk are loosing their antlers?”
She feels Adam’s silent nod.
Hoping to bring calm to his wife’s growing anxiety, “Possibly we’ll be like the bears; they’re starting to go into dens and lie down and go to sleep.”
“Maybe they’ll start falling apart, too!” Eve is unable to control her torrent of tears. “Oh, Adam, could you talk to God about this?”
“I already have, dear.”
“You have? What did He say?”
“He said it was all part of His plan.”
“Plan? What kind of plan?”
“We are to find out later and have patience.”
“Later? Adam, we’re dying. The whole world is dying. Birds are flying their way towards the sinking sun, fruit is falling off the trees and rotting, vegetables are getting harder and taste different, even petals are dropping off the roses…Adam, I’m cold,” tightening her arms, “did He say how long until we…?”
“He just said all this was part of the Fall.”
