“I don’t know man, last time I was late for work, old man Sipes said he would fire me for sure.”
“Dude? So what? You only live once, let’s go!” Drew said again impatiently.
“What’re you guys doin?” Clay’s girlfriend Tanya said as she came over.
“Drew wants me to go with him down to the television station so we can meet some of the NASCAR drivers.”
“That’s cool, I wanna go too.”
“No way, remember your Mom said you cannot be in a car with Drew because of his driving record. By the way dude, do you even have a license?” asked Clay.
“Sure do man, just got it back today. As an incentive to keep my driving record good, my Dad popped for this brand new car. I took the teen-driving course, and I did my community service for my last offense. I’ve been walking long enough. Look at it, ain’t it a beaut?”
The black shiny new car was parked at the curb. It seemed to beckon to the teens to get in and take it for a spin.
“Yeah, it’s nice man.”
“Way nice.” echoed Tanya. “Hey Drew, how about a lift home?”
“Sure hop in, since your boyfriend is a stiff, I’ll take you home.”
“Uh-uh man, Tanya’s not going to ride with you alone, I’ll go.”
“Alright let’s go then!”
The three hopped in the car and sped off. They were enjoying the new car ride and new car smell.
“Hey! There’s the RoBoCop brothers, hey man pull over.” Clay said.
Robert, Bobby and Copeland jumped back a little on the sidewalk when Drew came to screeching halt. They were called the “RoBoCop” brothers because although they were not real brothers, they had grown up together and did everything together.
“Hey dudes, we’re headed over to the TV station to see the NASCAR champions, want to come?”
“Hey wait a minute Drew, you’re suppose to be taking Tanya home.” Clay said.
“We will but first let’s go to the station, then we’ll go, it’ll only take a minute.”
“I’m in.” said Copeland.
“Me too.” said Robert
“Not me, I’ve got homework.” said Bobby. Actually that wasn’t true he just didn’t want to ride with Drew, the guy was just bad news behind the wheel. he thought.
“Aw, come on man, you can do homework anytime.” Copeland said.
“Yeah, man, come on.” chimed in Robert.
It was not often that the three separated except to go to their homes at night to sleep.
“No, really, you guys go ahead, I’ll catch up with you later.”
“Suit yourself man, you’re missing a chance of a lifetime.” Drew said as he pulled the car away from the curb.”
Bobby continued walking home, he almost regretted his decision, those were his best buds in the world, and they were just going to hang out. But he just could not shake a gloomy feeling he had. He stopped by the library to check out some new videos that the guys had said they wanted to see, and went home.
As Bobby opened the door he could see his Mom’s shocked face looking from him to the television screen. There on the screen was a shiny black car draped with a yellow tarp stuck to the front of a passenger train. The news reporter said “Five teens killed trying to beat a train out on Route 23. Witnesses say the driver ignored the downed gates and drove around them and the train immediately slammed into the car. Killed on impact were: Drew Stetson 18, Clay Fortunato 16, Robert Simmons 17, Copeland Aires 17 and Tanya Houston 14.”
“It can’t be true!” shouted Bobby. “Mom it can’t be! Not Robert and Cope, not them, not them! We still have so much living to do, together. It isn’t right! It isn’t fair!
Bobby’s Mom tried to console him by hugging him tight. He sobbed on her shoulder and kept mumbling something.
“What are you saying honey?”
“I should’ve said something Mom, insisted that the guys not go. But he said a chance of a lifetime, a lifetime shouldn’t be seventeen years Mom.”
