Fear has become familiar emotion during his teenage years. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great kid. But the world can be an evil place. I can’t protect him like I did in the past. I can’t kiss away his pain. As his independence increases so does my anxiety. With each risk I hold my breath. Nothing has prepared me for this.
Turning away from the window, I remind myself to breathe. I whisper the prayer, I’ve repeated many times before. “Lord, Here I am again, putting my Isaac on Your altar. Thank You, Lord, that you remind me that he is a gift given to me for a limited time. In gratitude, I recognize he is yours forever. Thank you that you promise never to leave him nor forsake him. I don’t trust this world, Lord, but I trust You. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
Peace penetrates the air around me. Breathing in a long slow breathe, I feel my body relax. Fear has subsided and an inkling of confidence returns to my spirit. I can let him go and let him grow. Worry will not become my friend. The teenage years are difficult. Parenting them seems impossible. Thankfully all things are possible with God.
