7 a.m! I’ve overslept!
Ancient alarm clock so inept!
No time to stop, no cup of tea,
No slice of toast, no prayer QT*.
Car keys lost, no-where in sight,
(I’m sure I left them here last night.)
Collect up piles of paper-work
And quickly button crumpled shirt.
Set house alarm and feed the cat
Then press the cooker thermostat.
Don coat and shoes, leave house and lock it,
(Find the car keys in my pocket),
Head off down the Motorway,
Mind full of all I’ll do today:
Deadlines to meet, full diary page,
Sign on my door that reads ‘Engaged’!
The day, full of activity,
Felt empty in reality.
Early morning! What a night!
A great relief to see the light.
Fruitless hours, no worse it gets,
To find we still had empty nets!
We’d toiled, we’d fished, to no avail,
(Why did we bother to set sail?)
That night, full of activity,
Was empty in reality.
THEN JESUS CAME and feelings fraught
Evaporated as He taught.
Then, though it seemed futile to do,
We went, because He told us to,
To fish deep waters of the lake,
T’was then our nets began to break!
An awesome catch! My heart was stirred,
I trembled at His Mighty Word.
I saw the fullness of His Power,
And felt my sinfulness that hour.
Deep waters beckon each new day,
God speaks, as I bow down to pray,
‘Surrender this new day to me,
Obey my Spirit steadfastly.’
So fill my heart, my God, with praise
For all your good and tender ways,
Help me confess now all known sin
And know your cleansing deep within.
Then Lord, enable me to pray
For all upon my heart today.
Please burn into my inner heart
Some fraction from your Word impart,
To challenge, nourish, help and feed
Myself and others in their need.
Then show me how you’d have me live
Today, and every day you give.
Life in all fullness, precious treasure,
A life that gives You joy and pleasure.
