I felt His laugh before I saw Him. When He called to me, I turned to see Him standing between the fruit trees, surrounded by the gorgeous pink petals.
“Daddy.” I rushed to His embrace.
“Zahlia.” The laugh rumbled up inside of Him and warmed the air. “I can see the thoughts dancing in your head.”
“Can you help?” I pulled away, taking one hand to hold it close to me.
“What do you think?” He began walking, slowly, taking a zigzagged route through the orchard.
I swallowed. “Are sure you want to hear it?”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“I don’t know…it feels…weird.” We stopped beneath a large peach tree and I moved to brace against the tree trunk, tilting my head back to stare up into the maze of twigged branches and pretty flowers. “It is beautiful, you know.”
He smiled, moving to sit on the green grass. “I’m glad you like it.”
“I love it.” I sniffed appreciatively. “and it smells good too.”
“I know.”
There was another moment of silence.
“And?” He asked, simply.
“And there’s this tune in my head that keeps spinning around! I should know the words to it and I don’t, it doesn’t sound like anything I can remember. It doesn’t sound right!” The words tumbled out too quickly for me to double check them.
“How is it wrong?”
“I-It feels…like…I don’t know!”
“Yes, you do.” He patted the ground beside Him. “Come.”
My feet automatically moved, propelling me away from the rough bark of the tree, to the softness of the brilliant, green carpet beneath me. “Thank you.” I barely pushed the words past my lips, barely a whisper, but I knew He heard me as I curled up next to Him.
“I love you.”
The happy glow immediately settled over me and I found myself smiling. “Yeah. I know. I love you too…so much.” I took another careful breath and the flowery scent nearly caused my head to spin. “It’s words.” I began. “And while I have a tune in my head…they don’t match.”
“The words or the tune?”
Now I had to think again. “um, kinda both.”
“Both?”
“Well, yeah, the words, the words are awesome, but they don’t seem to go with the song, which sounds like here, listen.” I hummed for a moment, losing the tune when my mind stubbornly tried to fit the new words to the new song.
A smile played about His face. “That is a beautiful tune.”
“You like it?” I sat up straight at once. “Listen to the words!” I cleared my throat. “For all the times, you hold me near, for all the love inside my heart, you hung the stars so I would see, this gorgeous tapestry…and that’s where the words don’t match.” I shrugged. “There’s more words, but like, you know.”
The smile finally surfaced in full force. “Those are lovely words.”
I blushed. “Thanks.”
“I am sure there is another tune in your head for those words…think about it.”
“Think about what?” I waved one hand. “I mean, what do I think about to find it?”
“Think about the very thought of it. You already know what it sounds like.”
“I do?”
“Yes.”
“Um…okay…” I closed my eyes, trying to think about thinking about something I couldn’t quite yet put my finger on. “I don’t have anything.”
There was laughter in His words. “It is a nameless melody, Zahlia…give it a name, then you will find it.”
I bit my lip, thinking as deeply as I could coax my mind. “Peach blossoms?”
“What about them?”
“Um, I like them?”
“And?”
“They’re…pretty.”
“And?”
“Soft.”
“And?”
“Pink.”
“And?”
I hesitated, a new thought springing to life in my head. “And haunting.” My eyes popped open and stared up at him, torn between mixtures of feelings I didn’t want to process.
“Why haunting?”
“Because it’s not all there.” The feeling of dread dissipated at once. “It’s like a mystery.”
“Your favorite.”
“Yeah…” The happy glow was back, double-time as my mind returned to musing.
“Would you sing it for me?” He asked, shifting to His feet.
I looped one arm around His elbow and skipped in step beside Him. “For all the times…”
