“How’s my favorite girl?” Pastor Jameson inquired in his cheerful manner.
“Fine, thanks,” she said in her small voice. “Pastor, did I ever tell you that once I had a preview of heaven?”
Those awake in the ward perked up their ears. “Oh, this is gonna be a good one,” scoffed Doris.
“Well no, I don’t recall that you ever did. Would you like to tell me now, Margaret?”
“Why yes I would. I was barely 26 years old. Funny just how quickly 58 years can slip away. . .”
Margaret--fragile and aging
Closed her pale blue eyes and sighed,
Once He filled me with His breath--
He saved me, though I’d died.
Her thin lips smiled slightly
As she took the pastor’s hand.
I saw my room so briefly
In His kingdom, oh so grand.
Occupants in the ward
Gave curious stares at best,
Then urged their roommate to go on
So they could hear the rest.
It wasn’t like the movies--
No, they truly don’t compare
To the magnificent radiance
Filling heaven everywhere.
My senses were acute there,
Musical notes I’d never heard;
Iridescent waters flowed from
Landscapes quite absurd.
Serenity, Tranquility--
His peace I’d never known,
My life had new dimension
After being at His throne.
A lovely spicy fragrance
Lingers in my memory,
Words spoken like a lullaby
God said, “Not yet,” to me.
That glimpse of His mansion
Changed the course of my life.
I was struggling with depression
As a newly widowed wife.
No one else could see Him
In the sterile room, all white--
He calmed me with His presence
And stayed with me all night.
Later while recovering,
God blessed me with His grace.
He cupped His fingers ’round my hand,
And smiled into my face.
I can’t compare God’s kingdom
To anything on earth,
But it woke in me a hunger
And an everlasting thirst.
Faith, my friends, is all it takes
To make your journey home.
Claim Him as your Savior,
He chose you as His own.
The ward was still and silent,
Margaret’s voice began to wane.
I think that I shall meet Him
Before the sunrise greets again.
With that she said goodbye
In a whisper to the pastor.
Clothed now in peacefulness,
Ushered home by her dear Master.
