“Drom, this is the third full moon I’ve seen since we started walking? Do you think this frankincense trader knows where he’s going?”
“Bactri, I’m just glad we get to do this at night. Your gold merchant keeps talking about that strange star they saw back home. A special season has come and he’s looking for the reason for it. We have to help him find it.”
“You don’t suppose we’re heading off for another war do you? There doesn’t seem to be enough of us here to make an army. Maybe a dozen of us two humps and two dozen of you one humps. Do you remember when we attacked that cavalry of horses? I’ve never seen them run away so fast. Their riders could hardly stay on.”
“That’s not the reason for this season. The Myrrh vendor did talk about a new king but I haven’t seen any weapons. I think this season is about peace on earth.”
“Too bad, Drom, I’ve been working on my sprints when they let my rope go. I’ve been munching those neem leaves to get my weight up.”
“And here I thought you were doing it to impress those extra long-lashed she bodies behind us.”
“Drom, you think they’re going to sell us off to the markets? Maybe I worked too hard on getting this nice thick coat. I was doing it to save me from the sun and the heat. Do you think I’m going to become a chieftain’s cape and dinner?”
“That’s not the reason for this season, Bactri. These guys have to get home again and they’re not going to walk. The frankincense trader keeps opening his scrolls and talking to them about the ancient promises coming true.”
“That’s good. I wonder how those scrolls would taste wrapped around a few of these thorny desert plants?”
“Is that all you can do, Bactri? Think of your three stomachs?”
“No, I’m thinking about that city on the horizon. Is it a mirage or is it real?”
“That’s Jerusalem, Bactri. You can see that bright white shelter. It’s the Creator’s house. Next to it is the king’s house. I heard about it from the last caravan that camped out with us. It means we’ve escaped the bandits.”
“Do you think we’ll be put in a parade before the king and all draped over with coverings and bells and flowers? I have such a hard time not eating the flowers.”
“That’s not the reason for this season. If this is where the new king was born we will rest and wait. Remember to bend low when we go through these gates.”
“Drom, I smell apricots, and barley and garlic and onions and leeks. Look, Cucumbers. Melons. Radishes. Turnips and lettuce.”
“Bactri, I smell Balsam, and Jasmine, and Anise and Aloes. Look over there. Caraway, mint, mustard, cinnamon and cloves. And over here. Parsley and Sage and Thyme.”
“All that flavor and no food to put it on. I forgot that you were one of the Spice guys.”
“And I forgot that you were the king of the Camel Lot. There’s the palace. Remember to kneel real low when you’re bringing these stargazers down to earth. Then get some rest.”

“Psss. Drom. The stargazers are coming back. Do you think they’ve found the reason for the season?”
“It doesn’t look like it. They’re looking up at the sky again. Look, there it is. There’s that star again.”
“At least they unloaded all those dates and figs and pomegranates. I guess those gifts weren’t the reason for the season. All we’ve got left is some gold and frankincense and myrrh.”
“Up we get. Remember, we got them safe this far. We’ve got to finish this job. We have to help them find the reason for the season.”

“Drom, I think that star got stuck. It’s not moving anymore. Do you think that star is the reason for the season?”
Bactri, these stargazers are sure excited. Now, we know that there are a lot of things that aren’t the reason for the season and I’m sure that the star isn’t either. But maybe it’s connected to the real reason.”
“Drom, we’re stopping.”
“Bactri, I think they’ve found it. Kneel down easy.”
“Drom, it’s a little boy and his parents. They’re kneeling in front of the boy. They’re giving him the gold and frankincense and myrrh.”
“Bactri. We did it. We found the reason for the season.”
