in her best holiday attire;
the shopping is done
and stockings are hung
eagerly awaiting
the arrival of Santa;
cookies are baked,
packages arrayed beneath the tree
anticipate the arrival
of family and friends.
The church is also adorned
with holy reminders,
like glowing jewels
stained glass windows
reflect back the light
of flickering candles,
a tree stands majestic and proud,
mother and child
sleep softly on the altar,
surrounded by blood red poinsettias
reminding worshippers
of the fate of this holy child;
worshippers arrive
to hear the angel voices
once again announce the Good News,
to gaze in wonder with the shepherds,
to offer gifts with the wisemen,
to witness a young mother
give birth to a tiny babe,
the Savior of the world;
candles flare, lighting faces
aglow with the miracle
of this holy night,
“Silent Night” fades away;
friends embrace and wish
“Merry Christmas.”
Candles extinguished,
stillness descends,
a sacred hush
fills the sanctuary;
lights turned off,
doors locked,
I step into the crisp,
star-laden
silent midnight.
It’s Christmas Day.
