There must be hundreds, perhaps even thousands of sad, tear jerking songs written on this planet we call home... Well, let me share with you my chill bumping, lump swallowing and tear flooding musical foursome, ok? (I reach for a Kleenex. )
LOST LOVE
I'll never forget the first time I heard George Jones sing, "He Stopped Loving Her Today". His voice came from a juke box in the corner of a cafe/lounge where I was sitting with a friend who was trying unsatisfactorily to help me mend a broken heart; but as I listened to the song a lump formed in my throat and the tears began to flow. Here I was in a public place, weeping about the tragic life of a man I didn't even know, who had also lost his love, and after a lifetime of pain was finally freed on his death bed. Wow, only a country song can tell it like it is. I wasn't alone. (The song still haunts me, and moves me to tears today)
GOD'S LOVE
Joyce Kilmer wrote a well known poem entitled "Trees". However, until you've heard it put to music and heard Sarah Vaughn's rendition of it - you haven't lived, you haven't breathed, cried or had chills go up and down your spine. Believe me! It's the most awe inspiring and sensational rendition of a song I've ever heard. I've played it over and over until I've almost worn out the record, but it never ceases to fill my eyes with tears as she finishes the song with a flourish of octivial swings up and down the lyrical scales in her spectacular style, with... "poems are made by fools like me, but only God can make a tree." Truly awesome. (I pick up a tissue)
LOVE OF COUNTRY
Choosing the National Anthem of any country isn't a surprise when it comes to tears. But because I'm from the USA, it's the Star Spangled Banner that makes my eyes water. It's not just because I wore the uniform of my country, but because it's my homeland, the motherland and the place of my birth. When the Stars and Stripes are saluted and one hears the words of the National Anthem ".......And the Rockets red glare, bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there...." ah ,yes, it's just an automatic eye gusher of pride and love for flag and country. (This too never dims despite her many goof-ups) (I brush away a tear.)
LOVE OF HOME AND FAMILY
Christmas is probably the biggest Holiday of any Christian nation on earth, and thus it brings home the family to celebrate. And, I'm sure you've already guessed the song that makes tears run down my face...and the one line in the song that brings them on like Niagara Falls..."Yes, I'll be Home for Christmas, if only in my dreams."
Those "dreams" come from battlefields, distant schools, far away cities, prisons, ships at sea, or all those across the globe that no longer have a home.
Sorry, Please excuse me for cutting out, folks, but I've got to go blow my nose, dry my tears and reminisce for a while about a place I once called home...
Thank you for allowing me to share my tears with you, and perhaps one day soon, we'll All Be Home For Christmas... where there are no tears.
