Put ripples in the breeze,
He was gentle and caring,
He wasn’t hard to please.
There was an easiness about him
That came from simple living,
His heart was full of love,
He was endlessly forgiving.
One hot 4th of July
He thought it would be fun
To take us to the rooftop
And watch the setting sun.
Then as the sky grew dark
And the fireworks filled the sky,
We “oohed and ahhed” in giggles,
Our dad was quite a guy.
He taught us how to pray--
Took us to Christian school.
He showed us what it meant
To live the Golden Rule.
I remember wintry nights
He’d get out the popcorn pan,
Melted cheese made it special.
He was a family man.
Tucked safely in my mind
Are memories I own.
I wish we’d had more time
But God’s plan called him home.
It wasn’t him who walked me
Down the church aisle when I wed,
But maybe he was watching
From his heavenly home instead.
My grandkids look at pictures
I have hanging from wall tacks,
And when they see great-grampa
They smile and he smiles back.
