Yes, I know I’m in trouble just from my title. I hope somebody reads this, because my editor probably won’t. He is a gruff old fellow from the hill country of Oregon. I can almost hear him violently turn off his computer as soon as his eyes saw this article.
"Change this whole sentence; wrong punctuation here, and here, etc." If you’ve dealt with an editor at all I’m sure you can relate to my predicament.
He wildly wields his red pen looking like one of the Star Wars Warriors dueling with their Light Sabers. He drives me to want to go back to delivering flowers for a living instead of trying to be a writer.
I have been under this guy’s tutelage for over a year now. At times, like today, I feel like one of those, "Thumb Print Cookies," Mom used to bake at Christmas.
I pour my heart and soul into an article and send it to him via e-mail. It returns to me a short while later looking like an Iraqi flag, red, white, and black. What ever made me think I could be a writer to begin with? All ego and self-esteem aside, after I cool down, I begin the drudgery of implementing all of his, "smuggested" changes.
After a time I reluctantly click on his e-mail address and send my "corrected" copy to him through cyber-space. To soothe my broken spirit I go down and play with the dogs while I await his reply. Dogs love you no matter how bad you write. Every writer should have at least one dog, in my opinion. I recently found out my editor has five.
I refused to look at my computer until later that evening for fear of more red ink. When I clicked on his reply I was shocked at the message. "Hey brother, the publisher bought your article! The check is in the mail. Good job!"
How can I love this tormentor so much the way he beats up my writing? I’m not exactly sure, but the fact that my writing is improving, because of him, probably helps.
