And laid myself on sun-drenched lawn.
I frequent this park with friendly trees
Whose perfumed flowers dance in the breeze.
As I drifted into my afternoon snooze
From afar I heard cheery “ahs” and “oohs”.
Then laughter, giggles and thunderous applause,
I opened my eyes, from my nap took a pause.
It appeared to be at least three generations
Enjoying each other at some celebration.
The arm of a tree held a banner which read,
“Happy 70th Birthday And Many More, Fred!”
Someone spoke laughter into the air,
I wish I was with them over there.
The honoree’s friends seem a good bunch
From my perspective, that’s more than a hunch.
A makeshift podium was moved into place,
I moved a bit closer to observe Fred’s face.
His upturned mouth gave life to his eyes,
As jokes confirmed how quickly time flies.
His friends and family spoke words of praise,
Some shared sweet stories of his younger days.
“Fred is a magnet, he draws people in--
He prays to Jesus and tries not to sin.”
“Godly standards account for his joy,
He’s mentored to many a young girl and boy.
“Like Fred, live honest, be kind and forgiving,
Be happy in what you do for a living.”
Fred stood to address his company of guests,
He thanked them sincerely, then made a request.
“Please bow your heads, I’ve something to say,
I thank you, dear Lord, for this special day. . .”
When he ended his speech, he embraced his wife.
I’ll remember their party the rest of my life.
Quietly observing the young and the old,
Absorbing the warmth of each story told.
Retreating to my sun-filled space
I turned once more to see Fred’s face.
His joy was wrapped in each person there.
I quietly bowed and whispered a prayer.
“Dear God, I want that kind of wealth--
Good friends, family, love and health.
Help me, like Fred, put others first,
Fill me, dear Lord, for You I thirst.
