I search back to find my fault. I believe it had something to do with fire, with knowledge, and with sharing them with others. I have always been curious, and now know the price of knowing truth. I question myself whether the truth was worth my current fate. As the sands beat me in the midnight hours, and the birds of prey taunt me from their lofty estates, I wonder if I will ever know a truth that is worth this infinite turmoil.
My days consist of speaking to myself. I have not heard another voice for an eternity. Then there came a day when a figure stood on the horizon. I pondered my sanity, than as the apparition came closer, fear attacked me. I created an image in my mind of what he might look like, and if it were true, than this day would be my last, as my heart could not bear to see such evil.
The figure came closer. Though it looked like a man, it moved with ease, not strained by the heat of the day. His features came into focus; he was plain, yet extraordinary, simple yet complex.
He lifted is hand to me, and spoke.
“Prometheus, my child, why are you undone? Do you not know who I am? You who sought knowledge and vowed to share it with the world, why did you not seek within yourself to find the source of all truth?”
His voice was calm, and complimented him well.
“How do you know my name?” I questioned.
“I know everything about you. I know your future and the past you have forgotten.”
“In the past lie the days that I curse. Better you remember them, than I.” I fell back against the great rock that held me.
“I remember the day you were born; so full of hope, so many dreams envisioned that day.” He smiled as he spoke. I looked up at him. It was as though the elements did not affect him at all.
“The day I was born. Was there ever a day? I question my birthday with every breath. Every step I took from that day has led me to where I am today. So do not speak to me of birthdays, for that is the day I curse above all others.”
He smiled gently. “Do not let anger hold you Prometheus, I promise that I know what is to be alone, I know what it is like to be in the desert, to be persecuted for knowing the truth. Let me sit with you a while, and you will see beyond these present sands to a place where you can rest in hope.”
He spoke to me of many things. I listened intensely to what he said. I had regained that fire I had lost so long ago, except this fire burned within. I had a revelation of knowledge that I had been searching for throughout eternity.
I do not know how long we spoke, but I felt as though time had ceased. As we both stood, I did not feel the familiar shackles that had bound me for so long.
“You are free Prometheus. We have spoken as friends. Do not forget today, for today is your birthday. Do not let the dreams and visions fade away. These chains no longer bind you, and in times to come, let me be your rock.
The future is waiting, Prometheus. Be the man you knew you were. I promise you the result will be better than you have ever dreamed.”
I began walking for the first time in ages. I stepped beyond the familiar. There was something else in the dry air of the desert; it was sweet and inviting. For the first time in a long time, I tasted hope.
This was my birthday, my rebirth, as Prometheus.
