I went to your memorial service today, Miss Beretta Lynn. The church was packed. Hot tears flowed. You were born on your mother’s birthday, not to an earthy existence but straight into the arms of Jesus.
Your mommy showed a picture of you wearing a little pink dress, you were so cute. She got that dress for you at the baby shower. You looked just like her, button nose and little lips. And your hair was the same pretty blond color too.
The church gave your mommy and daddy a potluck reception afterwards in the fellowship hall. We had more than enough food for everyone. There were no empty chairs and no empty bellies. There were lots of hugs and more tears.
I remember your mommy was in my Sunday school class when she was younger. She was also in a church Christmas play with me. I was an angel and she played Mary, the mother of baby Jesus. We had to use our imaginations a lot for the angels and Mary, and the baby Jesus was just toy doll but now you see them all just as they really are in heaven.
When your mommy got older she was one of the leaderships in the young people’s church groups. She went with some of us to visit a missionary that our church supports in Mexico. We worked on houses for the poor people there and did some medical work in the migrant camps. She wanted you to grow up and go on trips like this with her too.
Your mommy was there when the church had a baby shower for a couple who adopted three little children who had been abandoned. She loves children very much, just as Jesus loved them when He was here on earth. She planned to bring you to church to learn about Jesus just as her mommy brought her to church when she was little.
Your memorial service was very touching in so many ways. I am glad you will not ever see a memorial service. I’ve been to too many. But I’ve also been to many weddings at our church; it’s the same church I married my lovely wife in. I will get to be with you at the only wedding you will ever see, when the church, the bride of Christ, will marry the wonderful Savior whose arms you are in. I look forward with great anticipation to that day.
Your mother also liked to help out with the many widows we have in our church. The widows are good support for each other and having younger people fellowship with them brings them much joy.
You will miss things like this Miss Beretta Lynn. These are both sad and happy times here. Sad that you are not with us but happy you are experiencing life more fully than any of us here have ever had and without all the hardships.
Miss Beretta Lynn, your mommy and daddy love you very much. Your mommy wrote a wonderful poem about you. How she sang to you while you played in her belly, how she planned all kinds of neat activities for you two to do, and how much she looks forward to seeing you again in heaven. All this, and more, were printed on the little service program handed out in church today.
So, Miss Beretta Lynn, don’t you worry about your mommy and daddy down here because God will take care of them. I know because I see Him working all the time, right here in His church.
