“A stressed-out mom will head northbound a few minutes later. Hang around in that vicinity for five minutes or so, but just one or two of you won’t do. It has to be the whole flock to get their attention.”
“OK Dove.”
“Heron, at dawn Mr. Wilkins at 113 Cowpond Circle will be getting ready to head off to jury duty. Swoop by right outside his window, so he can’t miss you. That should tell him all will be well.”
“But... Pigeon, you need to fly right past him, close enough that your ruffled feathers almost touch his windblown hair. Perch on the north side of the courthouse at 1346 hours, when he’ll round the corner onto Main Street. Unfortunately, even seeing Heron right outside his window won’t be enough. He’s still gonna worry about his sick little boy, and he’s not even too sick. -- Mr. Wilkins needs a reminder to trust us.”
“Goose, Mrs. Smythe will miss Mr. Smythe something awful tomorrow. It’s their 50th wedding anniversary. You need to circle around the field across from her house at 0701, 1324, and 1946 hours.”
“Got it.”
“As usual, go alone. The lone goose symbolizes her husband waiting for her to join him. And she will, tomorrow night.”
All bowed their beaks in prayer for the nearly departed soul of Mrs. Smythe.
“Duck, take the Mrs. and the kids over to Swanson’s Pond right after school and fill up on stale bread thrown by the Pointer kids. Mr. Pointer lost his job again. I know it’s kind of cold, but that’ll make it all the more special for the kids, that you’re actually there. Little Michael will pray for you all to be there. They all need to know that some prayers are answered just like they want.”
“What about me?” said Woodpecker.
“Hmmm...” Dove thought for a moment. “Oh, I know. Mrs. Mallory will go back in the hospital. At precisely 1342 hours and 23 seconds you must fly from tree to tree right outside her son’s truck window. He’ll be southbound on I95, mile 304.63, heading home from his first vacation in years. He’ll be stuck in traffic, worrying about his mom. Your job is to let him know everything’s gonna be all right.”
“Egret, you need to perch on your regular pylon on pier 5 at Northside Beach around 1100 hours. Just sit there in all your delicate pretty whiteness. Mr. Horn’s daughter is still in a coma. Seeing you on his way to the home gives him hope. Seagull, you can keep Egret company again.“
Egret and Seagull smiled at each other.
“Owl, no matter how hungry you are, do not catch the rabbit at 39 Cromwell Avenue tomorrow at dusk. Little Jimmy is praying awful hard for his lost rabbit. The sight of you out hunting will point them in its direction. After fourteen days, they’ve just about given up hope. You’ll show them that miracles do happen.”
“Cardinal, Mr. and Mrs. Todd need to see you at the feeder outside their new assisted living apartment. They’re missing their more independent lives and need to feel at home. They’re in unit 12 on the first floor at 756 Sunset Road. Be there for supper; they’ll put out something special in hopes of seeing you.”
“Crow and Blue Jay, at 1912 hours you need to squawk with all your might in the far field behind Hooker’s Farm. Little Melissa is gonna toddle off and fall into an old well. -- Your squawking will allow them to find her in time.”
“Hummingbird, you need to stop by the feeder by the pool at 89 Long Road at 0939. Mrs. Swenson will get a call from the doctor saying her lump is cancerous. This’ll be a regular stop for you in the coming months. It’ll be rough, but don’t you worry, she’ll be just fine.”
Before returning to their respective homes in their little corner of creation, they finished their meeting, at Dove’s field this particular week, with a prayer. Dove said, “Please let Pelican heal completely so she can rejoin us soon.”
They always ended with, “God bless all creatures small and great, especially the little ones, in Your hands, their fate.”
