We all stood around Widow Blake’s house like a bunch of scarecrows that morning. None of us wanted to be there, but we felt it our “Christian duty” to help the old lady out. So we reluctantly dragged ourselves out of our beds at 5:30 in the morning, and now were having a contest to see who would be the last person to pick up a paintbrush.
Until Ted arrived…
When I first heard the merry sound of Ted’s off-tune whistling my frown screwed up even more. What business did he have making such a noise when everyone else so obviously was not interested in listening to his performance? Then I saw his goofy grin peek around the fence, and wondered why he was smiling – if I had a torch for a mop of hair and such a freckle-speckled face, I wouldn’t make such a fool of myself by grinning like that.
Ted hopped to the closest person like it was his duty to shake him out of the stalemate. “Hey, Bob!” he hollered as he slapped him on the back. Bob stumbled forward in surprise, looked up, shrugged… and then smiled back and the grin which still sparkled at him…
Ted skipped over to his next victim, who was wise enough to lean against the fence, protecting his back. “What’s up, Greg?” Ted asked with a chuckle, which added extra potency to his grin.
Greg valiantly tried to fight it off, but couldn’t. A smile stealthily crept on his lips, and he was the second man down.
Like most contagious sicknesses, once the plague starts to spread, no one man is the carrier. As Ted continued to spread the plague through our little group, Bob leaned over (sheepishly, it must be confessed) and picked up a paintbrush and paint can. As he opened up the paint can, he glanced over at me, a wide grin decorating his face.
Believe me, I tried to resist, but I couldn’t, in spite of myself… Vanquished by the plague, I smiled back…
