"Come quickly, O Lord," he whispered to the wind, "come quick to spare thy people."
Children ran in the high meadow, laughing without a care, and Milton's heart was touched with joy, breaking the shadow he still felt. He knew them all, each of them holding a special place in his heart. The elders speaking together as young men and women brought food for a meal on the hillside. The smell of roasting meat and fresh cooked vegetables drew him in, but the sight of such fellowship openly shared held him in awe of God's mercy and grace.
Silently he took a place among them, helping two of the women that seemed overburdened with the goods they carried. Tables were set up, but most sat upon the ground talking or simply enjoying the sun-- a day of rest for all.
As the children started to gather mothers had to pull them away while things were made ready. The delicious aroma filled their senses like Milton's, even as the warmth of the day overflowed from joyful hearts. An elder raised his hands and called out, and everyone became silent. Some knelt on the ground with heads bowed, others raised their faces and hands, eyes closed yet seeing the heavens above them.
Softly, words were spoken of God's blessing to His people, for the peace of the day and the bounty of the table before them. A prayer of hope in the coming days, with thanksgiving for that which had come and was yet to be gifted-- the coming day of the Lord.
"Amen" rang through the mountain meadow, plates were filled and handed around to the waiting children who quickly sought places to sit. Others joined in, slowly at first, then making room as more gathered around the tables. Though all were taking part in the feast, some could still be heard here and there speaking news of the day or sharing the latest verse of study.
As the meal was cleared, song was heard on the lips of the faithful-- a low humming that built until it filled the air with life, lifting hearts and voices in worship of the Creator and Savior of man. Soon all those gathered joined in a joyful sound of loving praise to God.
Milton's soul was filled to overflowing in that moment, a realization of hope for man in the last days. God had not turned from His people; He merely waited for them to return to the fold. As they sang on it seemed as if the heavens opened, a light brighter than the sun shone down on the group, and a warmth of God's love touched them all.
