It’s a good thing children don’t get embarrassed easily.
My three-year old proudly announced, “I’m a big girl now.” To prove her point, she dressed herself. Even at that age, she was concerned that her socks matched and her clothes were spotless. (Some things never change. Now, at almost 23, these things are still vitally important.)
For a treat one day, we went to McDonald’s for dinner. My daughter had chicken nuggets, her favorite food. She was wearing her homemade Snow White dress and acting like a princess.
“Ready to go?” I asked as we finished our meals.
“Yes, mommy, but I have to go potty first.”
“Okay, I’ll go with you,” I replied.
“No, mommy, I know where it is,” she exclaimed as she pranced off.
Since we had been to this McDonald’s before and the restroom was in sight, I let her go alone. As I threw the trash away, I realized that she went into the men’s room instead of the women’s room.
A young couple with their children was sitting at a back table. I said to the man, “my daughter mistakenly went into the men’s room. Could you please check to see if anyone is in there?”
He went in and came quickly out. “No one else in there. I’ll stand guard,” he said as he chuckled.
I thanked him and a moment later my daughter came out. The couple and I exchanged good-bye’s. Walking to the car, I said, “Did you know you went into the men’s room?”
Wide-eyed, she said to me, “it’s okay, mommy.” My daughter has always been a deep thinker, even at age three. She paused for a thoughtful moment, and then said, “Is that why they have showers in there?”
