No one has spoken since they’d dragged themselves in five minutes earlier. Marilyn breaks the silence. “Do you know what would make me happy?”
The disinterest on the part of the group was apparent. Following a long yawn, Ron broke the apathy. “No Marilyn…what would make you happy?”
“I’d be happy if Dr. Felter had the flu.”
Amy perked up. “Wouldn’t it be really cool if he was sick all week?”
Motioning with his up turned right palm extended toward Amy. Ron says. “I take it you’re not ready for Wednesday’s test”
Amy rolled her eyes…”and you are?”
“Probably enough to get a C.”
John raises his head from the desk where he’s been resting. “Do you know what would really make me happy?”
Together Marilyn and Amy respond. “What would make you really happy John?”
“I’d be really happy, if the three of you would shut up and let me sleep.”
Ron says. “Marilyn makes a good point.”
“I did? Wow. I didn’t think I ever said anything important before lunch.”
John responds. “I hate to be the one to tell you. You’ve never said anything important after lunch either.”
Ron interjects. “No guys, what would really make you happy?”
A grin appears on Amy’s face. “Mike Riley could make Marilyn really happy.”
John feigns being hit. “Like that’s about to happen.”
Jumping to her feet Marilyn responds. “Just what would make you happy pal?”
“I’d be delighted if I escaped with just a handful of bruises.”
“Amy, what’s your worse nightmare?”
“I don’t know. What’s my worse nightmare Marilyn?”
John points toward the door.
“Oh no, it’s Jeannine. I can’t stand her?”
With a puzzled look on his face, Ron says. “I thought you two were good buddies.”
“I like her fine in the afternoon, but not in an 8:00 o’clock class.”
Marilyn explains. “She’s just so darn happy all the time.”
Amy says “It’s like she takes happy pills with her coffee. I happen to like being grumpy in the morning…and…
As Jeannine enters the room John rises slowly and announces. “Class, it’s time to be happy now, little Miss Sunshine has arrived.”
Jeannine turns and bows. “Welcome to an exciting new week, the sun’s shinning, spring is here and the birds welcomed me as I left the dorm for my morning run.”
Amy grumbles. “Her bird pooped on my shoulder.”
Raising the forefingers on both hands and gesturing in Amy’s direction as if he has a pair of six shooters, Ron says. “She makes a good point.”
With a wry look, Amy responds. “Why don’t you go back to sleep?”
“If you can’t be happy right now, when will you be happy?”
Marilyn pipes up. “We’ll get around to it sometime.”
Ron concludes. “And the pub’s serving free beer tomorrow too.”
