And left sticky finger marks over the door?”
“Oh, a hungry, hairy monster came
And decided he would take,
Every item from the fridge to make a giant cake.
He cracked the eggs, sieved the sugar and flour,
In one quick bite, the raw cake was devoured!
But when he shouted out for more,
I bravely showed him to the door.”
“Where is the vase that sits on the fireplace?
And why is there lipstick all over your face?”
“A three-eyed purple alien,
Was rummaging through your stuff.
He wanted a little souvenir to bring home to Planet Puff.
He emptied out your make-up tin,
Swept the vase right under his fin.
I tried to stop him, Mum - I did!
But he was armed with lipstick, so I hid.”
“Well who tramped that play dough all into the mat,
And stuck it on Whiskers’ black fur? The poor cat!”
“I opened up the window, Mum
For a breath of nice, fresh air,
When an acrobatic monkey swung in from over there.
He showed me every trick he knew.
He started juggling play dough too!
Before I could say, “That’s enough!”
The blue bit landed on Whiskers’ fluff.”
“So which one painted the television screen,
In a garish assortment of red, blue and green?
The decorating dragon? The finger-painting fairy?
All these far fetched tales are making me a little wary.”
“You know I really love you, Mum.
And I really feel for you.
Those nasty little creatures have left a lot for you to do!
So I made this lovely little card
I’ve been working on it really hard.
You'll see a poem when you look inside.
I mean every word, as your thankful child.”
“What a kind gesture, sweetheart. How nice!
And guess what? I’ve got something for you.
Just go to the cupboard right under the stairs,
You’ll find a brown box full of brushes and pairs
Of rubber gloves, scrubbers, and an apron to wear.
It seems that those creatures didn’t venture in there!”
