One day, while Bo Bear was taking his nap on the couch, Mama decided to take the laundry outside to hang up. As was her custom, whenever she hung up the laundry, she would sing.
Suddenly, Bo Bear stirred. First, he sleepily opened his right eye. Then, he very slowly opened his left eye. As Bo Bear wiped the dust out of his eyes, he heard the prettiest song.
“Where is that coming from?” asked Bo Bear, as he glanced around for Mama. He stood on the couch, pulled back the curtain – and there was Mama, singing happily as she hung the clothes to dry:
“Behold, behold-
I stand at the door and knock-knock-knock
Behold, behold –
I stand at the door and knock-knock-knock
If anyone hears My voice
If anyone hears My voice
I will open-open-open the door
And will come in.”
Even though the tune was pretty, he scratched his head in wonder. “Whatever does that mean?” He decided to ask Mama. Bo Bear climbed down from the couch, and ran out into the sunshine, where he found Mama.
Mama smiled at him, and said, “How nice to see you awake, my dear bear!” She stopped what she was doing and asked, “What’s up?”
Bo Bear squinted his eyes as he looked up at his mother, and replied, “I heard you singing, and I didn’t understand what it means. Could you tell me?”
Mama kneeled down and hugged Bo Bear. “Of course I’ll explain what that means! Come on – let’s go inside and find out more.”
Mama and Bo Bear walked hand-in-hand to the big rocking chair. On the end table beside the chair was a big book that Mama loved to read every day, called “the Bible.” Bo Bear sat on her lap as she started to read about someone named Jesus. Mama told Bo Bear about how Jesus healed any who asked, His many miracles, and how He died on a cross to take away our sins.
“What is ‘sin,’ Mama?” asked Bo Bear.
“Sin is what happened when the first man disobeyed God. It keeps us away from being close to God; and if we die in our sins, we don’t get to live with God after we die. But Jesus came so we can have a relationship, and live in happiness forever with God.”
Bo Bear looked at Mama and asked, “Is Jesus still dead?”
“No, my dear, He rose again. We don’t have to fear death, if we accept Jesus as God’s Son”
“I like that,” responded Bo Bear. “But what does Jesus have to do with the song?”
Mama hugged Bo Bear and continued. “What Jesus is saying is, that He’s knocking on the door of our hearts, and if we just open up, He’ll live there forever.”
Bo Bear wiped and forehead and said, “Whew! I’m glad He hasn’t knocked at our front door, because I was afraid I didn’t hear him!” Bo Bear sat a moment. Then he tilted his head toward his mother and said, “You know, I think I hear Him knocking at the door to my heart. Can you help me ask Him in, Mama?”
Mama smiled, and gave Bo Bear a kiss. “I’d be glad to help you,” responded Mama gently.
As Mama led Bo Bear in the prayer, he felt happy that he’d opened the door of his heart to Jesus. And he knew that from that day forward, he would have a friend no matter where he’d be or where he’d go.
Would YOU like Jesus to live in your heart, too? If so, please pray: “Lord Jesus, I know that you are knocking at the door to my heart, and I want You to live there. I believe that You came to this world to take away my sins, and I believe that You are the Son of God. Please guide me to do what You want every day of my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
