Much too early for her first class, she took a walk around campus. Ending up at the door of her first class, she heard music playing, and hesitated a moment before stepping inside the door. Feeling transported into another dimension by the music, she watched as the elegant fingers danced across the black and white keys, the music touched her in a way no other music ever had. She wasn’t familiar with the piece; she knew it was classical; however she had little knowledge of classical music. The woman turned and smiled, as if somehow she had been waiting for her.
“Come on in; do you play?”
“I used to think so until I heard you.”
“The music of the masters, it has unquestionably stood the test of time. I’m Dr. Sara.”
Lindsay reached out and took her offered hand, “I’m Lindsay Phillips.”
“I’m pleased to meet you, Lindsay. Sit, play something for me.”
“Oh I…I couldn’t.”
“Lindsay, we are all at different stages in life, and hopefully we each bring our uniqueness to one another. Come now and let me hear you play.”
Her hands began to move across the keys, and she knew God had guided her to the perfect place in time.
“You have fine technique, almost as if you become one with your instrument. Are you are taking my class?”
“Yes, I am. I don’t mean to be rude but I wasn’t looking forward to it. Now I can’t wait.”
Dr. Sara laughed, “You will enjoy studying the masters. Our musical heritage is a diverse compilation. A broad exposure is a pleasure not to be missed.” Other students began drifting in, class began and so did her love affair with classical music.
The motor whined as the convertible top folded into the truck of her car. Her thoughts were running rampant as if caught in a flow of turbulence from the breeze blowing through her hair. Mostly, they kept jumping back to Dr. Sara; one brief encounter with this instructor had opened her heart to a whole new world of music.
I know I should call first, she thought, but I just have to share my day with Mrs. Bishop before I literally burst from the excitement. Music lessons had rated high on her list of things she most loved since she was nine, that was when she first began studying music, as time marched on Mrs. Bishop became both a teacher and a friend. The past couple of summers Lindsay had helped teach some of the younger students.
The tires cracked and popped on the gravel driveway leading up to Mrs. Bishop’s house. Her knock went unanswered, just as she was turning away she heard the squeak of the door opening.
“Lindsay, what a pleasant surprise! Come in and I’ll make us a pot of tea.”
She sat at the kitchen table and chatted while Mrs. Bishop prepared a pot of fresh brewed tea. “Let’s take our tea in the parlor, and have a cozy visit.”
“I don’t believe you have ever just stopped by before, so I am filled with curiosity.”
“I attended my first day of college today and I wanted to tell you about my music class.” She commenced to tell her about Dr. Sara.
“I have heard of Dr. Sara; I understand from time to time she takes on a protégé. It would not surprise me if you were her next candidate. You have a very special gift, stick with it Lindsay, reach and keep reaching and your gift will propel you.”
“Thanks to you Mrs. Bishop, you are a wonderful teacher and friend.”
“Thank you Lindsay, I have been telling you for a while now that I have taken you as far as my capability allows. It is time to spread your wings.”
She hugged Mrs. Bishop; tears were making there way down her face.
“It’s time Lindsay it’s time, and I’m thinking it’s time for me to do some traveling, which means I am in need of an assistant, you know anyone who might be interested?”
“Oh, Mrs. Bishop, that’s music to my ears!”
