Could you mayhap spare a dollar
Or even two.
Kids’r hungry, ma’s got the flu.”
“Sorry, sir, we love to fill
Your empty pockets from the till
But the till’s bare.
There’s just no money we can spare.”
Again, I bow my head to pray
Another man is here today
At the church door
Hat in hand, eyes on the floor.
Pastor Dan, just down the hall,
Has heard the much familiar call
Of one in need
And my answer to his plea.
“I know how you dislike the task
Of saying no to those who ask
And truly need;
But some will come just out of greed.
“If only we could give them food
We’d know that it would go for good.
We can’t be sure;
I hate it too, but what else is there?”
“How ‘bout we give them just enough
food for a meal, and maybe stuff
So they can wash.
Oh, and the Word, and Bible tracts.”
Pastor Dan jumped right on board
“Let's stock a cupboard! Hit the store!”
A shopping trip!
For this assignment I’m equipped.
Warehouse stores are wondrous places
Filled to brimming with big cases.
Mass amounts
Of sundry goods I cannot count.
Credit card and list in hand
My course is set, my route is planned…
The warehouse store
To fill a cart with wares galore.
Setting out I pause to offer
Thank you prayers to God my Father
And will he send
Wisdom, guidance, and discernment.
Once inside the mart so massive
Bright, wide aisles have got me dancing
In my heart
And miscellany spills into my cart
Volunteers come by next day
To fill some bags then humbly pray
“God, bless each one
To profit from this mission we’ve begun.”
“Scuse me ma’am, don’t want to bother,
Could you mayhap spare a dollar
Or even two.
Kids’r hungry, ma’s down with flu.”
“Sorry, sir, we love to fill
Your empty pockets from the till
But I can grant
Food to fill your tummies if you want ”
Again, I bow my head to pray
Another man is here today.
I ask that hope
Might be passed on and help this soul to cope.
I also praise the Holy Name
Of Him Who truly made my day
The time He said,
“Go shopping, there are people to be fed.”
