“Tricia, your wedding is in two weeks and I haven’t seen your dress yet.”
“Don’t worry, Mom. The final adjustments are being made. It will be ready.”
“I don’t understand the secret about it. No one has seen it yet. I worry about whether it will be done.”
“Mom, you worry too much. Tomorrow has enough worries of its own. God clothes the birds and the flowers, so I know He will care for me.”
“Of course you’re right. I’ve never been able to give up worrying.”
“Mom, I love you. Is your dress ready?” Tricia laughed as she asked, knowing her mother already had her dress.
“Your father and I will be dressed in our finest.”
“Good. I need to get some stuff at the new house. I’ll see you later.”
Once at the house that she and Jake would share, Tricia headed to the sewing room to put the finishing touches on her wedding gown. A few hours later, there was a knock on the door.
“I’m here, as summoned, for the viewing of the final fitting.” Kate’s brown eyes sparkled as Tricia hustled her into the house and closed the door. “It’s a good thing I’m your maid of honor – it’s an easy way to get out of the house.”
Laughing together, they headed into the sewing room. Kate gasped, “It’s beautiful. It does look just like this picture.”
“Mom hasn’t noticed that her wedding album is missing – temporarily. It’s been so much fun to recreate her wedding dress. I think she’ll be thrilled.”
“Tell me again what happened to her dress?” Kate inquired while Tricia began dressing.
“In Russia, where mom and dad were married, it’s a tradition to take a wedding dress and tear it up to be used for cleaning rags. Mom wanted to break the tradition and keep her dress, but her own mother confiscated it and had it destroyed.”
“That’s really sad. She has no idea that you’re making your own dress?”
“Nope. I”ve been able to keep it a secret. She’ll see it on my wedding day for the first time.”
The girls decided the dress was fine and needed no further adjustments. Carefully, they put it in a linen bag, where it would stay for the next two weeks.
“Thanks, Kate, you’re such a good friend. See you tomorrow night.” Kate headed home to her husband and Tricia went back to her parents’ house for the night, eagerly anticipating her wedding day.
Two weeks later brought unexpected sunshine to a cold February day in northern Minnesota. Tricia and Kate arrived at the church hours before anyone else. Kate laughed as she said, “You know, Jake can’t see you until you walk up the aisle. I remember when I married last year – Dan kept trying to see me.”
“I remember that Jake had to keep Dan away. I wonder if it will be opposite this time.”
“They are twins, but so different. My Dan is an architect, and your Jake is a building demolition expert. What one destroys, the other builds.” Amidst the hair dryer, make up, and nails, the girls carried on an animated conversation.
Later, Kate looked out the window, “Your parents are here. You ready for your mom to see you?”
Taking a breath, Tricia nodded. “I’m ready. Remember to make her close her eyes.”
A moment later, Kate opened the door and whisked Mrs. Lotfia into the room. “Come in, then close your eyes. Tricia has a surprise for you.”
“Okay, Mom, open your eyes.”
Alena opened her eyes. “You are beautiful.” Peering closely, she asked, “Your dress … it looks like mine.”
“Mom, it’s a replica. I’ve been sewing it for the past three months.”
Alena smiled through her tears, “Thank you, my daughter.”
