Across the way was a petite blonde, leg idly shaking, high heeled shoe half off her foot. A couple perched on the edge of the plaid couch next to the window. Tense. Holding hands, exchanging nervous glances.
Are we that obvious? Anyone looking through the window as they pass by must know what we’re here for. But we have to be here – otherwise all hope dies.
She thought about herself. Did the desperation and desire that ate at her insides show to outsiders? Oh, these people waiting with her weren’t outsiders, they were part of the in crowd, even though they’d never seen each other before, and she might never see them again. They all carried the same craving, and yearning within them. But what about those she mingled with on a daily basis? What about Bernard in the next cubicle – could he see the need?
What about the time she was at a party, and looked over and saw the host with what she most wanted in the world? It took all her resolve not to rush over, and wrestle it from him. A gentle, restraining grip on her arm from Sam stopped her. He, at least understood. Well, he should — he was her husband after all.
That longing so was tangible she could almost taste it, like taste buds that savor an orange before it reaches the lips. It’s all she thought about, it consumed her every waking moment, and infiltrated her dreams at night. At first they were unwelcome, but now she found solace in her nights, because in her dreams, her needs, her wishes and her desires were fulfilled. The morning reality was always a little hard to deal with.
She took hope in the needle. It provided optimism, no matter how short-lived. Just plunging it in every day gave her reason to keep on going. The burning of the liquid as it coursed through her body helped sustain her. The doctor told her it was for the best – it was the only thing that could help feed the desire.
Her reverie was broken when the nurse opened the door. “Mr. and Mrs. Thompson. This way please.” The nurse smiled, and followed the couple into the back.
She leant back in her chair, eyes closed and prayed silently.
Please God. I want a child.

Question...what was the part about the needle? I must be missing something...could you send me a message at your convenience and explain it to me, at your convenience?
Thanks for posting.
