Cherubim, encompassed with indescribable beauty matched only by their powers, were the announcers and guardians of The One’s glorious presence, sovereignty and holiness. They were the highest order and took their place seriously and joyously.
The Seraphim, or burning ones, had the honour and privilege to dwell in the very throne room of The One. Without ceasing they proclaimed, “Holy, holy, holy is The One”. They never tired or grew weary of the song.
When the mightiest of all Cherubim, Lucifer, defied The One as Sovereign, war tore through the ranks of angels as a bolt of lightening splits the black night sky. All was changed. Fiery swords were crafted from the furnace of The One’s wrath. Warriors were born and angels learned the craft of war.
As the exiles were expelled from the presence of their Creator, the remaining angels gathered at the throne. The One had summoned them.
“We have created a world. It is pure and untouched in its beauty but will not remain so for long. Our enemy will seek to destroy it and all who dwell within its frame but especially man.”
He stretched open a veil to reveal a blue globe spinning in space. It was surrounded by other such orbs and a brilliant source of light and heat. The One pointed to a particular place on the globe. All eyes delved deeper into the world, down into a garden. There on the verdant grass of the first spring day a man lay. He seemed to be sleeping. He looked the colour of the earth itself.
“This is man. We have created him in Our image.”
The One looked around. There was an expression on His face that left the angels feeling unsure. Even at the height of the rebellion such intense passion did not shadow the face of The One. All waited in expectancy and urgency to know what was to be done. Michael and Gabriel, the mightiest Cherubim unsheathed their flaming swords.
“When the Breath is breathed into the man We will start something which cannot be revoked. All will be required to take part in the unfolding story during time of man. There will be many new assignments. Man will be needy of Our presence. They will need protection, provision, encouragement, direction, and for some, even destruction. Will you pledge yourselves to Us and to man now?”
The Heavens and the new Earth resounded with the unsheathing of fiery swords. Like thunder the voices rang, “For the One and for man.”
The One then separated the angels into ranks befitting their calling: Mighty Warriors, Messengers, Protectors, Encouragers, Worshipers, Ministers, Scribes and Revealers. Each rank stood tall and straight, ready for action. All were accounted for. All but one.
Did The One forget about this Cherubim? He had surely proven himself faithful and true during the rebellion. His mark had been engraved on a number of the Fallen, even on Lucifer himself. Where was his place?
“Son,” The One called out, “come.”
He walked sedately toward the throne.
“We have a special assignment for you. We need an Engraver. Will you yield your sword for this purpose?”
The angel looked into the face he loved so well. “With all You have given me I return it for Your will.” He bowed.
“We wish you to engrave eternity into the heart of this man before We breath in him the Breath. And, for every man born as long as his kind are on the earth.”
“Yes, my Liege.”
The Engraver unsheathed his sword and pierced between joint and marrow to the very heart of man. He then skillfully etched eternity in its place.
