“This assignment is just too hard, Mom! I’m so discouraged! Mrs. Ashby must think we’re all geniuses!” Debra slammed her book shut and jumped up from where she had been sitting at the kitchen table. She walked over to the sink to stand beside her mom, who was slicing carrots and cucumbers to put into a salad for dinner.
“What is your assignment?” asked her mom.
“We’re supposed to make a list of the literary devices used in a story by Ray Bradbury and write a paper about their impact on the plot. There are a ton of literary devices, and I get mixed up on them. Besides, I can’t understand how they impact the story.”
Debra’s mom put her arm around her and led her back to the table, where books and papers were jumbled together. “Let’s have a look at your definitions for literary devices,” she said. “You can pick out the descriptions you like the most and see where they match with the definitions of your literary terms. Then you can consider how they affect the way you think about what happens in the story. As you work on your assignment, you can pray and ask the Lord to help you.”
“Oh Mom, the Lord doesn’t want to be bothered with little things like helping me with my homework. Besides, it would take a miracle for me to get this done.”
“Sure He does, Debra. I remember a story in the Bible about a time when some of the disciples were discouraged after they had worked all night at their job without success, and the Lord came along and helped them. Why don’t you go to your room and read that story. It’s in the Gospel of John, Chapter 21, verses one to six. Then ask the Lord to help you as you do your assignment.”
A little while later Debra came back into the kitchen and gave her mom a hug. “Thanks, Mom.,” she said. Then she sat back down at the table and opened her book.
“You okay?” asked her mom.
“Yeah,” said Debra, “I’m going fishing.”
