His tone was friendly as he limped along beside me, his eyes squinting from the light of the sun high above us. He’d glance down at the dusty road beneath his feet, but mostly he kept his gaze fixed on what lay ahead of him. Ahead of us.
“Yep, full of rocks and potholes and narrow as anything. Come to think of it, why don’t you let me sneak up there ahead of you,” he suggested, in a fatherly tone. “I know the way, and it would give us more room if we walked single-file.”
As he struggled around me on the path that was barely the width of my foot, I could hear his labored breathing. This was not an easy journey for him, but he was determined. I was glad to be walking the path along with him. The destination should have been motivation enough, but I enjoyed his companionship. His single-mindedness motivated me to continue.
As he trudged on in front of me, I noticed that his clothes were just as torn and tattered as my own. Actually, his looked even worse than mine. The knees in my pants were only slightly worn, but his were ripped from one side to the other. This man must spend a lot of time on his knees, I thought.
“Have you been traveling on this road very long?” I asked of him. I assumed that he would answer in the affirmative. He seemed much older and wiser than me. And, he seemed to know the way.
“No, not really. I started off on that wide road over there. See that one with the huge mass of people traveling on it? All laughing and joking and not really paying much attention to where they’re headed. Yeah, I was on that one for a while. It was a blast, too. That is, until I realized where I was headed. Then the Good Lord led me to this path here. I’ve been on it ever since. It isn’t always easy, but it sure beats the alternative.”
Hearing his words, I glanced down at the dirt beneath my feet and I began to see the footprints of all those that had gone before us.
“Hey! I thought you and I were the only ones to travel this path, but now I see that others have gone before us.”
“Yes, dear friend, they paved the way for us. In fact, they are waiting for us to join them.”
“Well, I sure am glad the Lord sent you to guide me in the right direction. I’ll just follow you, okay?”
“Oh, don’t put your faith in me, friend. Sure, I know where to find Bread, but I’m just a beggar like you. Fix your eyes on the destination and you’ll never grow weary. You’ll never lose heart.”

It has been said that evangelism is one beggar telling another beggar where to find Bread.
