Bo grinned through a mouthful of pasta. He held up a hand letting Sally know he would answer her when he finished chewing. “I can tell you my parents are great people who are always there for my little brother, Jake, and me. Of course, I have a bigger story if you’re interested. I’ve been adopted three times.”
Sally’s face registered curiosity. “You have to tell me now! How could anyone be adopted three times? “
After one wistful look at his half-eaten plate, Bo gave in and began. “I like to tell people I was born in the hospital and Mom arrived five minutes later. She and Earl had tried to have a baby since they were married, but specialists had determined her chances of having a child naturally were slim.
Not long after Mom got that prognosis, she got an interesting phone call from a friend‘s parents. This couple knew her trouble getting pregnant. They had met a young woman who was searching for someone to privately adopt her unborn child and immediately thought of Mom.
Mom says she was overjoyed. She and Earl hurriedly contacted my biological mom, Karen. Apparently, because Earl and Karen were both in the military, the whole adoption process was easier than a civilian adoption, even with thousands of miles between them.
When my due date was a week away, Mom and Earl began the trip to pick me up and finalize things. They were planning to arrive a few days before I was born, but I decided to make an early entrance. Mom says it was by God’s amazing timing that she arrived at the hospital when she did. Karen asked her to come into the recovery room so that she could literally give me away. Mom says it was a moment she will treasure forever.”
It was getting late, so Bo asked the waitress to bring their check.
Sally wasn‘t sure she understood. “So the first time you were adopted was by your mom and Earl? I thought your current dad was always your dad. You look so much like him!”
“Yeah, I get that a lot.” Bo decided not to ask Sally if she enjoyed her food as he finished paying and took one last glance at the feast he had missed. “I’d better get you home or your dad might not let me take you out again.”
“I‘ve got to hear the rest of your story.” Sally continued while walking to Bo’s truck. “Please tell me more on the way home.”
“Well,” Bo began after he had backed out of the parking lot, “right after my first birthday, Mom found out she was pregnant. Mom says she believes God meant for her to find me before letting her have Jake. She says we are both her miracle children.
Earl, on the other hand, didn’t like being a parent. Life with Earl was a time I would rather forget. He and Mom divorced when I was five.
Dad came into our lives a year later. It didn’t take long for he and Mom to fall in love and get married. Earl asked Dad to adopt us right away. I was seven when my second adoption became official.”
“That’s only two,” Sally declared as they pulled into her driveway. “How could you be adopted three times?”
“If you think your dad won’t mind us sitting on the porch for a while, I’ll tell you how,” Bo assured her.
“We have a few minutes.” Sally led Bo to the porch swing. “Just keep talking.”
Bo took a deep breath. This could cost him a second date, but how could he pass up the chance to tell her? “When Earl left, Mom started taking us to church. That’s where Mom and Dad met. It is also where I learned about a man named Jesus and His Father who loved me. Mom told me that if I let Him adopt me, He would never leave me. When I accepted Jesus as my savior, I became adopted for the third time.”
The porch lights blinked and Sally began walking toward her front door.
Bo slowly followed. He liked Sally, so he cringed and asked, “Would you mind if I call you again?”
Although her hand was already on the doorknob, her face revealed true excitement when she turned and smiled. “You’d better!”
