Meg mentally whispered the prayer she and Justin had written the weekend after he was diagnosed with cancer. "Help me remember in the days ahead the You are everything—my strength in weakness, my wisdom in uncertainty, my comfort in fear, my relief in stress. Be my Rock and my Tower. Be my Jehovah-Raffe, my Jehovah-Shalom...meet all my needs. Even in the worst of times let me remember You are all I need." Then she added, "and let me remember that, even in death Justin will ultimately be healed because that is Your promise and You don't lie to Your children. Help me to trust You, Lord."
She cleared her throat. Lisa looked up for the first time and Meg said, very calmly, "What's wrong?"
Lisa had been Justin's nurse through each level of treatment, from a 50% of survival, to 30, to 12 and, finally, 4%, looked up. She exhaled, sighing as though something greater than herself had compelled the air to flee her lungs. "Oh, Meg..."
Meg felt lightheaded. She steeled herself, thinking, 'This is it... She'd gone downstairs for something to eat and had missed the last few minutes of her husband's life. "Where is he?" '...help me remember You are all I need...'
"They took him down already."
"Down?" '...be my Rock and my Tower...'
"For tests."
Meg blinked heavily and took a deep breath. "What tests?" Her mind changed gears immediately.
"They took him for another full body scan."
Meg frowned. "They did that yesterday."
"I know." Lisa swiped her tiny hand over her eyes. "But they seemed excited about something today—a whole group of them, walking fast, whispering together. They didn't tell the nursing staff anything; they just came up and took him down for the scan."
Meg frowned and walked to the bed, helping Lisa as she tugged out the last of the wrinkles. "Excited?"
Lisa nodded and shoved wispy bangs out of her eyes. "I don't know about what. But, Meg, I need to tell you something incredible. I'm excited, too."
Meg thought about the boyfriend Lisa was expecting a proposal from and smiled. "What is it?"
"Justin introduced me to Jesus this morning."
Meg's mouth fell open and her eyes widened. "He did?"
Lisa smiled. "He's been trying for a while. Well, you know that. He said you've been praying for me to understand why I need Jesus in my life. And this morning it became to clear. And I asked Jesus to save me from my sins and be my Lord." She giggled and looked up at Meg. "I feel so happy."
Meg grabbed the girl and hugged her, patting her back. "I'm happy, too," she whispered.
Lisa pushed away. "And, Meg, I think that's why Justin got sick. Do you know how many people he's told about Jesus that he wouldn't have met outside this clinic?"
Meg nodded. "We talked about that."
The door burst open and Dr. Conn rolled Justin in ahead of himself. Justin, sitting in a wheelchair, smiled, and his happiness split his face, allowing Meg to see a smile she hadn't seen in a while.
"GONE!" The doctor roared.
Meg and Lisa looked confused.
"GONE," the doctor shouted again. "It's not all gone, but the cancer that had speed to his lungs—GONE! The spiders breeding off of the original tumor—GONE!"
Meg felt her knees give way from under her and collapsed just as the wheelchair reached her side. Justin grabbed her and helped her to the bed she stood beside. He took her hands in his. "God is faithful," he said, smiling and crying at the same time.
"God is faithful," Meg whispered back, caught in the joy in his eyes.
"God is faithful," Lisa said, and they all began to laugh and cry together.
