“Hey, calm down, Abby! You’re always saying that, so get over it, okay? If you really hated it that much, you’d sneak out at night. I’m just glad you don’t. ”
“Yeah, right, like sneaking out will help. I miss out on everything. Everyone has fun except me.”
“Personally, Abby, I think you’re lucky to have the family you have. I’m on stepdad number three. My mom cares more about the men in her life than she does about me. This current husband, Ralph, gives me the creeps. At least your parents care.”
“My whole life’s been under a looking glass. I can’t get away with anything. My dad’s a minister, my mom is principal of the high school. And if that’s not bad enough, my oldest brother’s a policeman. People treat me like I’ve got the zombie plague. ‘Oh, don’t invite Abby. If her dad or mom or brother find out, we’re all busted.’ I’m tired of it.”
“Whoa! Slow down, Abby. I’ve never seen you this upset. Oh, let me guess why. It couldn’t be because Tyler, the most popular guy in high school, invited you to that party tonight, could it? It’s not the party you care about, it’s because Tyler asked you.”
Abby flipped her hair with the back of her hand and sent it swirling around her head like a cloud. “Grrrr! Of course it is. That he would even want to ask me considering who my parents and brother are means he really likes me. I told him I’d think about it.”
“Uh, you do know what goes on at those parties, don’t you? My mom doesn’t care what I do, but even I won’t go to those things. Drinking, drugs, pairing up with random partners. No, thanks! I’m going to make something of my life so I don’t end up like my mom who hooks up with any man who’ll take care of her. Come on, Abby, lighten up.”
“But, Hailey, it’s Tyler! Every girl would give anything to go out with Tyler. Maybe I will sneak out tonight. Or, I could say I’m staying at your house. Er, I hate this! It’s like I have no privacy. It’s like living under a microscope.”
“Nah, Abby, don’t involve me. I like your parents. If you want to stay at my house, that’s fine. You can help me side-step my creepy stepdad. But I won’t help you lie to your parents. Don’t do it, Abby. Don’t go. Someday you’ll be happy your life has been so transparent.”
“Never! I’ll never be happy about it. Oh, forget it. You don’t understand, Hailey.”
Hailey sighed as they left the school property and started the walk to their houses. “Promise me you won’t be stupid enough to go that party. Don’t you remember all the horror stories we’ve heard about the trouble that goes on? Why don’t I come over later and we can go see the new movie with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. You know the one? About space or something.”
“Yeah, maybe. It’s better than sitting at home and crying all night because I could be with Tyler. You’re my best friend, Hailey, but a lousy substitute for Tyler. I’ll always wonder what I missed out on.”
The girls did go to the movie, although Abby mumbled and complained all night about the fun she was missing out on. She was still asleep the next morning when Hailey called. “What?” she groaned into the phone. “I wasn’t awake yet, Hailey. What so important? Seriously? Are you crying? It sounds like you’re crying.” Abby was wide awake now and sitting on the edge of her bed.
“Have you heard the news? Never mind, I guess you haven’t.” Hailey choked out the words. “Tyler and four other kids from school were killed in a car accident. It happened about midnight. The news report says drugs and alcohol was a factor.”
