The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want—

But I do want—to tune out the rumble
of these unwanted sounds around me
to make still my anxiety
as I lie here—bring comfort
to me, I plead, oh Lord
calm me as I wait
for the dreaded
yet fated
hated
test.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters—

I’ve not quite reached those green pastures yet Lord
stuck here staring at this hall’s green walls
enduring the gossip of staff
that pretends I’m not present
laying on this gurney
stripped of dignity
scared and scorning
the exam
on my
mind.

He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake—

To be honest Lord, I’m not yet restored
my faith keeps stumbling off path—I fear
this examination—this plight
this pending quiz has me vexed
I don’t want to be here
silently screaming
needing leading
back to hope
but I’m
weak.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and they staff they comfort me—

In this sterile valley I lie—engulfed
by shadows of unanswered questions
of death spreading inside me—Lord
prepare me for whatever
this probe of me may prove
take thy rod and staff
and fling evil
far from my
tortured
thoughts.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over—

I know You hear—as Your Holy Spirit
comes like a flood—anointing my soul
just before the needle’s potion
takes control—lulls awareness
of evaluation
and violation
I feel Your fire
and praise You
as I
drift.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever—

I awake feeling goodness and mercy
sustaining me—and I remember
this hospital—the test—God’s love
that flamed my dying ember
into faith that fears not
my exam results
for regardless
I will dwell
in His
peace.
