“I... I,” Katie sputtered for a moment. “I can't learn everything in seven years!”
“But I thought it was a popular verse. Something about God loving the world, or something like that.”
“I know, I know. And it is a possible verse. But hey, the Bible is a big book. You can't expect me to know what page it is on.”
With a frown, Jane sat back. “Okay. Fine. How about creation? Do you believe in that?”
“Uh, ya. I suppose so.” Katie shrugged. “I mean, it is in the Bible, right?”
“Is it?”
“Ya. Genesis.”
“Can you show me?”
“I didn't bring my Bible with me.”
“What! But I told you I wanted to talk about spiritual stuff. I mean, aren't you supposed to be “ready to give an answer”?”
“Huh?”
“I think that is a passage from the Bible. That is what one of the people who come knocking on my door has said.”
“Oh,” Katie drummed her fingers on the coffee table. “When you said you wanted to meet and talk about spiritual stuff, I thought you meant, like, ask me where I go to church, or who my pastor is.”
Jane gave her a quizzical look. “Why would I want to know that?”
“So you can come to church and learn about God.”
“Oh brother, Katie. You've gone to your church for seven years and can't even tell me a popular Bible verse. Why would I want to go to your church?”
“Well, the Pastor could answer your questions. He is the expert.”
“So your Jesus doesn't let everyone have the answers. He just gives it to a special few people?”
“Well, no” the lady squirmed, “I mean, anyone can read it.”
“Then why don't you?”
“I do.”
Jane raised her eyebrows and took a sip of her coffee.
“Well, I mean, I read it some of the time.” Katie confessed.
“Hmmm.”
“But no one can know everything about the Bible,” she defended herself. “I mean, ask me something else. I bet I will know it.”
Jane gazed at her friend for a moment, then nodded, “Okay. Why are you a Christian?”
Katie jerked back. “Huh?”
“Why, Katie? It obviously doesn't mean too much to you. Why do you still call yourself a Christian?”
“Well, it is the right thing to do.”
Jane smirked and earned a glare from her friend.
“Because I don't want to go to hell. Heaven is a better option.”
“I see. You are in this to save yourself.”
“That isn't what I sa...”
“Thanks for the coffee,” Jane shoved herself away from the table. “I think I will go find someone who is an expert in their religion. They might provide me with some answers.”
“But you can't...”
“Katie.” Jane softly interrupted her friend. “I want answers from someone who wants their God enough to seek Him out. I want something more than a “better option”. If I can't find someone in Christianity who desires to know about their God, then I will look elsewhere. I have no desire for people who don't want to excel and push forward.”
Turning on her heel, she left the coffee shop, leaving behind a bewildered friend, and lost opportunity.
