Me: OK. Will call as soon as I run the last round of tests.
Sis: You better.
Me: lol.
“Hey, it’s me.”
“Hey me, I knew you worked for some big top secret pharmaceutical company but I just heard a rumor from mom. Is it true? Are you really going to play this game with your life?”
“Whoa—slow down, Sis. I am running the final set of verification subroutines on the DNA Enhancer now. It’s all good.”
“It’s all good? Good for whom?”
“This will enable me to live forever.”
“I can’t believe this. I just can’t believe you are experimenting with your life like this.”
“I’m serious—it’s all going to be okay.”
“You sound pretty confident. You’re sure this game you’re playing is going to work for you?”
“Absolutely.”
“When are you going to take the injection?”
“It’s all set up for 8:00 tonight.”
“Oh, my… I will be praying.”
“I knew you would be—but really, Sis., there is no need. Game on.”
Flash forward thirty years.
“Jenny? Jenny?”
“Huh? What’s going on?”
“Jenny? Hey it’s just me. Your brother.”
“Oh, hey you. You look the same, as always.”
“Of course I do.”
“You were right.”
“Right about what?”
“You were right about that DNA thing all those years ago. You don’t look a day older than the day you took the injection.”
“See? I told you so.”
“Ha. One thing hasn’t changed, either.”
“What’s that?”
“You still have that big head.”
“Ha-ha. Yeah, I guess that’s okay. Big ego plus a big wallet. I’m rich now, too.”
“I heard something about that. I don’t hear much about the family stuck here in the hospice. Just what I see on the news.”
“They are selling my formula all over the world.”
“That’s amazing. But, now there is a recession in the funeral business?”
“Yes. The only people who are dying now already had an incurable terminal illness or are the victims of accidents or murders.”
“But… wait a second. If all these people are living forever, how are they all eating? Where are they all living? The worldwide drought must be affecting your plans?”
“We foresaw this and we are adding on to the moon and mars colonies.”
“You have an answer for everything. Don’t you?”
“Yes.”
“Well, Bro., I have something to tell you.”
“Oh, oh—here we go. But I will listen, considering you are in here, dying of cancer. It’s such a shame, Sis. because if you would have just listened to me twenty years ago and took the injection you would have lived forever with me.”
“Whoa, hold on. I have to tell you something.”
“Okay, I am all-ears.”
“You see all this?” Jenny pointed out the window.
“Yes.”
“All of this—everything—is going to be destroyed by fire.”
“Really? I thought all the nukes were destroyed with the World Atomic Accord?”
“All I know is how the Word of God reads. ‘Heaven and earth will pass away’ Jesus said, ‘but my word will never pass away.’ The very earth you all are trying to live forever on is not going to be here forever.”
“So you are saying this is all just a big waste of time? This is all just a bunch of vanity?”
“Yes.”
“How sure are you of this?”
“Absolutely sure.”
“I’ve been thinking about life in general lately. I look up to the stars and think things like What’s the point? Why am I here? That kind of thing.”
“That’s really awesome. He who created the stars has the ability to destroy them. At the same time, he who created you also came to this earth to die for our sins so that we may live forever with him.”
“But you definitely won’t be living with him on this earth, since it will be destroyed by fire?”
“Very funny, Bro. But a good point. Jesus is creating new heavens and a new earth.”
“Well, if this earth is getting burned up anyway, I wanna be on the new earth.”
“Really?”
“Yes. I’m so sick of life, here, Jenny. I have everything and anything I could ever want in this life, but I’m still not happy.”
“I know how you feel. I finally reached out to the Lord in prayer, crying my eyes out. I asked Him to forgive me. He loves you so much, Rodney.”
“I feel it. My game’s over.”
