Have you ever heard God’s footsteps?

In Genesis 3:8 Adam and Eve “heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day…” These words are written about that awful day when sin forever separated mankind from God. When Adam and Eve heard God’s footsteps they hid among the trees after frantically trying to cover their shame with flimsy fig leaves. Since they recognized the sound of God walking, we can presume they had met with God before. Perhaps an evening rendezvous between the Creator and the created was a daily ritual.

Adam and Eve must have had a wonderful time blissfully exploring the delights of the universe created just for them. They couldn’t help but see God everywhere, and I think they looked forward with great anticipation to the time of the day when God came calling. As the day cooled and the shadows lengthened, they eagerly listened for His footsteps. Like little children running to greet their father, I can imagine Adam and Eve meeting God with excited chatter, happily telling Him all they had discovered that day. The Creator must have taken great pleasure in the joy of his children.

Until that awful day they sinned. As evening approached, they again heard God walking in the garden, but this time they did not come running. Instead of joy and eagerness, the sound of God’s footsteps brought fear and shame. Like naughty children, they hid themselves. Sin had separated them from God. But God, still wanting a relationship with his beloved creation, made them coats of skin and set the great redemption plan in place.

Today, thousands of generations from Adam and Eve, sin still separates man from God, and yet God wants a relationship with you. He wants to walk and talk with you in the cool of the day.

Do you hear his footsteps? Do you want to run and hide? God has provided a “covering” for your sin and he welcomes you with open arms.

Listen for his footsteps today. Run toward God and he will run toward you!

I like your devotional's powerful admonition to listen for His footsteps...and so fitting for this Advent season.

You did a splendid job with this. I could feel the sick feeling in my stomach when I had done something wrong in junior high and knew I had to face my parents. I'd never quite thought of Adam and Eve having that feeling too until I read this piece. It's very powerful. Congratulations on ranking 19 overall!
