Cooke smacked her lips and licked her finger.
The sauce was hot, the news was hotter.
Appetites whetted, they grabbed the fodder.
“She’s down and out, I saw it coming
Trouble surrounds her, always humming.”
“Will her husband leave her, I wonder;
How can he stand her storms and thunder?”
Throw that in and stir the pot, the sauce can never be too hot.
One subject done, another served;
Let’s see who’s next, I’ll skewer the bird.
A sharp jab here, an acrid spray,
“Listen to what I heard today!”
“What did you hear? We have to know;
Your stories keep us in a throe.”
A ruined marriage, a runaway child,
A smashed up car, a life defiled.
Throw that in and stir the pot, the sauce can never be too hot.
Or can it?
Belching fire, patting chests
First one, then more of her fine guests
Began to leave,
The oddest thing...
A sudden end to this ‘wing-ding’.
Their stomachs rolled, their heads did pound.
Their sleep this night would not be sound.
For God has said to love our neighbor
And gossip he can never favor.
What if, instead, the sauce was stirred with happy thoughts and kindest words?
No sharp remarks, no untruths spoken,
No soul made to feel so broken.
Add the sweet, mix in the savory
Speak much of hope, of joy, of bravery.
Next time they linger at the grill
Cooke’s decided to do His will.
“Please eat as much as you desire
there’s plenty more upon the fire.”
“If when we’re through there’s any left
I’ll give it to a soul bereft.
Because He gave so much for me
I’ll live His love for all to see.”
Throw that in and stir the pot, is that heavenly sauce, or what?
