I want to be a bubble floating through my corner of the world for those who share my orbit and need a bouncy bubble to float by every once in a while. I want to lighten the mood and offer a reason to smile. I want to be the not-so-distant cousin of balloons and dime store candy. A reason for others to take their eyes off of the heavyhearted aspects of life that creep in without invitation.
They are important, bubbles are. They remind us of so much we have forgotten somewhere between infancy and adulthood during the undetected moments that we become responsible, focused and determined. We grow, of course, to learn the importance of being dignified, earnest and sober, but we forget. Oh, we forget so much. We forget that the seriousness of life can be interrupted without risking the loss of everything we have worked toward.
We forget to be the tiny bubbles that float through the air that little children try to catch in their mouths and get up on their tippy-tippy toes to reach. Have you ever succeeded in capturing a perfectly spherical bubble in your hand and watch as it sits there on your palm? It feels as though you are holding the whole world right there. Am I right? And once that bubble pops, and of course it does, you can’t even be sad about it. Instead, you are giddy as your face gets sprinkled with bubble juice and you are pleased that you got to train that marvelous thing to sit still for just one magical moment.
So look up from your screen for just a second and imagine a bubble floating by in the space right between your eyes and this word. Did you do it? Oh, go ahead, no one is watching. Try again.
I’ll wait.
Did you imagine that effervescent bubble floating by while indecisively deciding which way to go? Maybe it was the wind or the air conditioner pushing it around erratically or maybe, just maybe, it was floating around like a child we all once were, overwhelmed with all the choices and directions available, but cheerful and carefree just the same.
