I look at all I’ve done.
I glance back at a year flown by,
And ponder what’s gone on.
In every month and every day,
In each speed-ticking hour ...
Did I live my life all as my own,
Or live in Jesus’ power?
Was every moment passed in a way,
That acknowledged Christ as Lord?
Or did I jump off the praise committee,
And onto the complaining board?
Did words of honey ooze from my lips,
Healing hearers with their flow ...
Or did thorns and jackals rush from my mouth,
Delivering deadly blows?
Was my life a living sacrifice,
Was each second on the altar?
Or did the god of self-interest cloud my time?
Self – that idolater.
Did sweat and hard work accomplish much,
And in the end meet with success ...
If so, was that an earthly account,
With my Heavenly bank penniless?
Jesus, I want ever year,
To count as one for You.
So looking back and looking forward,
I’ll see the great things You do.
Now glancing back in retrospect,
I see a life laid in Your hands.
The months, the days, the hours played,
Like a symphony in Your plan.
Not every word was kind with love,
Self was not always offered,
When the richness of Your presence wore thin,
I felt worse than a pauper.
But in that year I see a growth,
More wisdom that’s been gained.
Your school of life has taught me much,
Through blessings and through pain.
Each year holds new adventures,
Spiritual lessons all around!
It’s up to me to see them,
To let Your glorious teachings abound.
As I strive this year and all the rest,
To be more a faithful servant.
I’ll be on watch for goals and chances,
And of Your wonders be observant.
My years hold opportunities,
Each one to love You more,
To know You and to spread Your love –
That’s what this life is for.
