lives wrapped up in books:
biographies, novels
concoctions of cooks,
gardening,
travel,
and mysteries deep,
all friends to discover,
and thereafter keep.
Each one a slim volume
crammed juicy and thick
with phrases and words
most carefully picked,
like rosy-red apples
sun-kissed for delight,
alive with full flavor
and crisp to the bite.
Some will us titillate,
as they do scintillate;
others will fascinate,
as we them contemplate.
And so I choose a few to take,
which new worlds show to me,
as light shines on a treasure trove,
a great discovery!
And though the air be cold with frost,
I find myself away
on island beach with silver waves,
a languid summer's day.
Another time I might escape
my little corner room,
and flitter forth to fields of flowers,
the lilacs in full bloom.
Their fragrance wafts across to me
and leaves a joyous calm,
then lifts me up to fly away,
intoxicating charm.
Such friends us invigorate
even as they stimulate,
and the heart do captivate
as we quietly meditate.
So when my mind is hungry for
delicious dream diversion,
I wander through the library shelves
for fantasy immersion.
And then I sit entranced again,
winged to another age,
where I am gripped by mystery
that makes me turn the page.
Such friends I have for every mood,
and always close, "on tap".
They beckon me,
horizons stretch,
a new world in my lap!
