On the 26th of April, 2008, a Derringer slipped and fell, discharging into the face, neck, leg, forearm and chest. Pellets pierced a jugular vein, a carotid artery, the windpipe, food tube, thyroid gland, several entered the lungs, one resting against the heart and another beside the main artery coming out of the heart, and some bounced off ribs lodging the liver with others stopping behind the stomach and spleen. I was rushed to the ER and later air lifted to a trauma facility a couple hundred miles away.

My wife started calling prayer chains, friends and family. A dear friend contacted FaithWriters. There were three separate occasions where I came close to dying. Each of these episodes was marked by times of the most intense prayers.

I am now home, discharged only six days after the accident. It’s humbling to realize someone living in the country, miles from a small town, was prayed for by people all over the world and God answered. He also answered my prayer from a week or two prior to the accident: “Lord, I’m uncomfortable where I am spiritually (stagnant). I want to be closer to You.” If I had known then how He would answer I doubt if I would have made that prayer, though now I would not change anything. It was the start of God’s answer. God knew exactly what I needed. His ways are perfect, every time.

A few days into my hospital stay, my sister came to visit. We had not seen each other in 20 years or spoken in over 15. For the next three days we shared with praises to the Lord. We grew closer during those three days than perhaps in our entire lives. I told her the number one blessing for me, chronologically, was her visit and in priority of richness of blessings it was also top.

The blessings continue. I now carry a picture of the CT scan showing where many of the pellets are. When I see someone I know I ask if they want to see my picture (everyone likes pictures). After a few seconds of studying it, I tell them what it is and then give my testimony of God’s love. What a wonderful blessing and opportunity to share Jesus to others.

Thank you to all who prayed for me and my family. Please pray for my added ministry as the accident and testimony will be incorporated into my profession as an RN. We serve an awesome God!

FYI: a .410 gauge shot shell, three inches long, contains ~140 two mm diameter lead pellets. 10 hit the pickup.

Oh, Clyde, I'm so glad and grateful to read your story. I was one of those alerted to pray for you here at faithwriters. I hadn't heard an update (distracted by too much else), but your name came to mind today, and I came looking for you.

"No experience is ever wasted on a writer," I once read. "It is just material for a story." Not only that, but every experience is useful for the Christian as we tell our own version of that old, old story of Jesus and His love! God bless you and your wife and family. Thank God He brought you through your accident to tell about it!
