Cast: B’rabbas (Rebel chief), Simon, Gangster Girl and Rebels’ Chorus, all in period costume of Jewish rebels and thieves.
Simon:
Hey B’rabbas, boss! I’ve had it wit’ dis rebel thang! Like, I’m outa here, man! I’m runnin’ wit’ dat prophet J.C. and his Nazarene Dream Team.
B’rabbas:
You gonna WHAT?? (Echoes)
(Rap beat begins. Everyone starts movin’.)
Hey Bro, don’t go! Like, yo’ part o’ dis crew!
All d’ rebels stick together. What’s d’ matter wit’ you?
We could hassle on d’ Romans if we all got guts.
Den we knock ‘em off d’ block, gonna kick their butts!
You’re a Jew, boy.
Gotta stay true, boy…
Don’t quit. Don’t split. ‘Coz we gotta see it through, boy.
Rebels’ Chorus (sing):
Woah, Simon, whatcha gonna do?
Aint freedom fightin’ good enough for you?
Hey Simon, dontcha be a geek.
‘Coz it’s so not cool t’ be a Jesus freak.
Simon (raps):
A rebel givin’ trouble, he aint goin’ no place.
Like, good men die when dey get in Herod’s face.
Dis stuff, it aint nothin’ but a dead-end street.
Messiah Man rocks, ’coz He’s got a better beat.
Revolution?
… Aint no solution!..
And bustin’ mah guts aint gonna change d’ Institootion!
Gangster Girl (Kneels before Simon and sings):
Woah Simon, … don’t leave me!
Woah Simon, …don’t grieve me!
Simon, mah boo, yo’ breakin’ mah heart! (Simon shakes his head sadly.)
B’rabbas (raps):
Dis Messiah you admire, man, He makes like a freak.
If ya get one in d’ face, He says “Turn d’ other cheek.”
If we gonna lick d’ Romans, like we gotta treat ‘em mean
Not d’ soul-searchin’ **** like dis Nazarene scene.
He’s a fake, man.
Tell ya, it’s a take, man…
You’z a goin’ d’ right way to make a big mistake, man.
Rebels repeat: “Woah, Simon etc”
Simon (raps):
Don’t mess wit’ d’ Messiah, He knows what it’s all about.
He got lerve from aberve for d’ folks dat bummed out.
He can give ‘em a new livin’ when they think they gonna die.
He can level wit’ d’ devil and den stick him in d’ eye.
He’s d’ Man…
He got a plan…
..To fill d’ hole in mah soul like nobody else can.
(Beat stops abruptly and they all freeze on the word “Bro”)
So Bro, ya gotta come and follow dis Messiah Man. (Grunt!)
(Police siren sounds and they all run into hiding, except Simon, who walks off stage.
Gangster girl comes out of hiding and runs after him.)
