It was then that Sherry began a life of moving from one foster home to another, and her life and emotions swung from one end of the pendulum to the other. All this shifting from home to home only added to Sherry’s insecurities, fears and doubts. It seems that what was to bring her stability only brought her instability.
The day came when it was announced that a family had adopted Sherry into their home. It was then that she found herself with parents, a brother, sister, two dogs and her very own room. This new life overwhelmed her, and added to her insecurities. During this time of her teenage years, Sherry would often times rebel, and could not control her habit patterns or temper.
This family had made space for her, space in their homes, in their lives and what frightened Sherry the most; they had made space for her in their hearts. Nothing was withheld from her, and this was a difficult adjustment for her.
Adjusting to her new found family, school, friends, and going to church on Sundays, Sherry soon realized that that her heart could not contain this new love and life. She realized that the space in her heart was filled with the opposite that she has recently received, and could not find within her to reciprocate the love that she longed to give.
It was then that she realized that she needed help, and went to her new mother for guidance. Her new mother told Sherry than in order for her to receive the new she must first discard the old. The space in Sherry’s heart was filled with anger, bitterness, hurt, lies and insecurities. Sherry knew that this was her time to be a new young woman, and through courage that came out of no where, Sherry said yes, and a heavy load was lifted from her shoulders. She gave all of these feelings to Jesus, and asked Him to take away all these things that were taking up the space in her heart.
Sherry’s heart was now empty. Ridding herself of all this junk, the space in her heart was ready to be filled with faith, hope and love, and more importantly, to be filled with the love of Jesus.
With her new mother by side, never leaving her for a moment, Sherry accepted Christ into her heart. She soon found out that her heart can contain space enough to love and to give to others. To this day, Sherry continues to fill the space in her heart with the love of Christ, and giving out all the goodness she has received.
